Factory iPod connection

I've got a 08 GTI with the standard stereo with no disc changer but it does have factory fitted iPod connection in the glove box, only problem is I can't get it to work I've tried both my iPod nano and the old square iPod nano but either doesn't seem to play It shows a VW badge on the iPod and says it is ok to disconnect but does not play am i doing anything wrong or am I not pressing the right button or is it just broken?

Is there an aux button on your unit?
Normally you press the cd button twice to access the ipod in my car.

No there isn't a AUX button but I'll try the cd button when I get out to it, off the London in it today so plenty of time to play

Thanks it all works fine.

.......but after the 220round trip I've decided I want a rcd510 with Bluetooth and DAB, I'll get saving
