Power Drain Off RCD 310?
« on: November 14, 2012, 06:42:36 pm »
Went out to the car on Sunday and battery was completely flat after me not using it for 2 days, so thought no more about it after I got it going. But every day since its struggled to start, just gone out now and it's flat, managed to bump it this time....

Had a RCD 310 fitted about 10 days ago, have heard of power drain off the nav units, is this what's happening to me ? How do I fix it ? In the mean time is there a fuse I can pop out ?

Thanks

You need to check what CAN Gateway revision you have on the car - get someone who has VCDS to scan the car for you. I would bet that you have an early CAN Gateway revision that is causing this battery drain issue.  :happy2:

The radio fuse iirc is in the engine compartment so have a look in your user manual.

Position F8, and it's a 15A fuse in the engine bay.

Cheers guys. While I'm here, anyone know if I'd have a power drain problem if I went for the latest Alpine nav/tv unit ?

Don't quote me on this but I think the power drain issue only occurs with VW third generation head units when using an early canbus gateway.

power drain issue due to pre Can gateway L version.

Need a new Can Gateway.

You can change the fuse in the engine bay.
Then it will not drain the battery. But you will have to turn radio on manually each time.
But it will automatically go off when you remove the key.

This should only be done as a short term measure. This is not shutting the radio down by command from the gateway, but cutting the power off

What year MK5 and DSG or manual?

As I have come across all 2004-2007 DSG GTI's/R32's all have the Can gateway located above the clutch pedal (I know DSG owners don't have one)
Manual is a pain to swap out, DSG is much easier. Hardest part is taking Red connector out of the gateway.
