Steaming up - best climate control settings
« on: November 16, 2012, 10:41:55 am »
May be bit naive of me, but what are the best settings to remove moisture from the air/inside of my car? Recently everytime I get into the car the front windscreen on the inside has condensation on it.

Any tips?

Also general what's best to have the climate control on in terms of 'econ' on or off, 'auto' on or off, recirculation, facing front, up down etc :)

Leave it on auto with the aircon button switched on, also make sure recirculate is off. This is the best way to keep the interior from misting up and get rid of the mist. If the windscreen is really misted up, press the windscreen defrost button and then switch back to auto once it's clear. My aircon button is always on, regardless of the temps. That is the whole point of climate control. Set the temp and let it do it's thing.

Leave the A/C on all time and adjust the temp to your liking as you go. I always leave it on and just 1 bar of power, never get steamed up.

An application of Rain-X on the inside helps too...

And it seems like they have a dedicated product now -

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_201119_langId_-1_categoryId_255225

Pretty poor reviews though.

I have used this - its a waste of time to be honest. I find that if you give the inside of the glass a good clean and as mentioned, leave the aircon on, it will minimise the steaming up.

Do you find it has an effect on your MPG leaving it on all the time.

 :happy2:

Same here, though I always leave it on ECON. Only rarely does the windows steam up and when they do, I just switch it onto windscreen only to clear, then back to ECON. I should add that the windows only tend to steam up if my son has been in the front and turned the vents off!!!  :fighting:

Keep in mind, in Econ mode, the aircon compressor does not run. This is not a good idea to not let it run for long periods. The oil does not circulate through the system keeping the O-rings lubricated, this can lead to leaks which can be costly to repair. You should always run you aircon regularly for at least 10 minutes at a time.

Yeah, it's actually better for the aircon system to be run most if not all the time. The whole point with climate control is that you set the temp and the system does the rest if set to auto. Using sensors, it decides where best to put the air to maintain the desired temperature.

No idea on fuel consumption as I never switch mine off. There were some tests conducted many years ago in South Africa where it get's really hot, as I am sure you are all aware, so the air conditioning really has to work hard to earn it's keep. The test was to check the effect of air conditioning on fuel consumption and it worked out that it used less fuel to use the aircon on the motorway than opening the windows, but obviously there was a penalty compared to running without aircon and with the windows closed.

This worked for me - pollen filter is only around a tender and easy to change with a Torx T20 tool
