Air Filter?
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:57:37 pm »
Hi,

With the Mk5 golf 1.4 im thinking of changing my air filter to a K&N.

Now this may sound stupid to you but am I right in thinking this is all im changing?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-N-Performance-air-filter-VW-GOLF-PLUS-MK5-1-4-1-6-FSI-2004-2008-/121021893464?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c2d778b58

Or do I need this like the full induction kit?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-Golf-Mk5-2008-1-4-TSI-K-N-57i-Air-Filter-Induction-Kit-57-0618-1-/200816946164?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ec19f6bf4

I could do with a bit of advice really!

I currently own a 54 plate golf 1.4s

To be honest mate, I'd buy the cheapest cone filter from Halfords or eBay as there won't be any performance difference between either of them on your car.  :happy2:

Is it just the top link I need though?

I seem to remember a friends Saxo VTS a few years back with the whole induction kit (pipe and cone)

Although when I look at the second link I posted its for the 1.4TSI 140&170ps engines so obviously not mine.

Having had a panel K&N filter in my car and having refitted the oe paper filter. I could not tell any difference in performance even at stage 2+.

I dont expect much of a performance gain but the noise is appealing.

Also, is it better or worse on fuel consumption?

Since refitting the paper filter my mpg has improved and my boost fluctuation has gone.

i always felt this.  on a non performance car i'd just go with a cheap cone filter.  it'll do the job of keeping the dust out and sound good too.

TBH, it's not really worth it for any sort of performance increase, however if it's cosmetic / sound then go for the filter on a stick... don't forget to tell your insurance company of course.  :innocent:
