Hello!
« on: November 19, 2012, 09:07:06 pm »
Just had my Focus written off...sob...  :-(

...which means I'm in the market for a GTi...yey!  :-)

Been having a good read through the forum this weekend and trying to get an idea of what I need to look out for. Thanks to all the generous people who have posted all the fantastic info on here. Really glad I found this site and looking forward to buying my first VW.

Jon

Hoping to be able to scrape £9k together after the insurance pays out, so I've been looking at '07 cars with around 60,000 on the clock. So far my checklist is:

Standard manual, unmodified car. I'm more interested in condition than extras and options. Not DSG.
Colour isn't really important. Okay, not luminous green, but I think they look superb in most colours.
Five doors preferred, but I won't turn down a mint 3 door  :-)
Leather seats would be nice.
Standard alloys, and I'm guessing I'll prefer the 17" for a softer ride, but again, not a deal-breaker.
Full VW service history is a must, and evidence of recent cam belt change would be good.

I'm near St Albans, Herts, but happy to travel to find the right motor.

Welcome! I also switched from a focus (mk1) to the Golf, and you will not be sorry.

Also had a similar list of requirements, apart front the leather.

I would get what you can afford with good spec (personally xenons are top of the list as costly an not easy to retrofit). Mine want high spec - had xenons and sound pack but not much else, since had cruise fitted, armrest, Rcd510 with Dab and integrated Bluetooth module, plus colour coded skirts and rear bumper and front valance

So you see lots can be done without costing the earth so focus on the bones of the car (like the device history like you mentioned) and enjoy retrofitting some bits

Welcome along Jon!  :drinking:

You should be able to get yourself a more than tidy GTI for that money. I always recommend doing a "must have" spec list as well. Leather seats are ok but put it down the list, not important IMHO. VWFSH would be veey good and if your buying a Mk5 Golf over 4 years (or 60k on the clock, whichever came first) old, make sure it's had the Cambelt and Waterpump changed as well.

Wheels are either 17" or 18" Monza's. Personal choice but I much prefer the look of 18" wheels, fill the arches better and ride comfort is fine. I wouldn't have a problem running 19" either. Get yourself in a couple of cars and try them out.

Xenons are a good thing to have as is a MFSW (Multi Function Steering Wheel), Highline display and my favourite, an RNS510 sat Nav Headunit.. All of these things can be retrofitted so its no biggy if there not on the car you get.

Keep an eye out in the For Sale section on here as I would have no problem buying a car from a fellow Mk5 enthusiast. Generally the car will have been looked after and maintained above and beyond the required amount.

Enjoy the forum (and the car when you get it)

Cheers, Martin

Thanks for the tips guys. I forgot about the xenons, I'll add them to my mental list. Interesting to hear that you don't think the ride quality suffers with the 18" wheels. I'll try and test both and see how my back feels  :-)

Now I just need to find the time to go car hunting - my weekends are filling up with Christmas chores and parties. Not the ideal time to be buying I guess.

I'll definitely try and get a car from someone advertising on here. My last purchase (968) was enthusiast owned and has proved to be a fabulous car.

I like leather seats, but heated seats make me feel like I've pissed in my pants. So not too high up my options list
