Price drop?
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:46:44 am »
I'm in the market for a mk5 and, with the mk7 just around the corner, I'm wondering whether the values will be likely to fall any time soon. What happened when the mk6 came out? Was there an immediate impact? Obviously, I want to avoid paying £9k for something that's suddenly worth £7k in the new year!

Thanks,

J

You can pick up a an early mk6 gti highish mileage for just under 12k now so 10k mk5s are strugggling to sell, i would wait as this will push down mk6 prices which might then be in your price bracket

you can still pay a fair high price for a mk5 gti, mk7 will effect it but not to much as the mk5 still looks a good car
I only bought 2 months ago and nearly paid £10688 for a gti mk5, 07 plate, 42k miles, 5 door, basic spec but with mdi
I ended up paying what would be considered a high price for a mk5 £12750
but it came with
08 plate
excellent bodywork
factory bi xenons
full leather
winter pack
lux pack
new 18 monzas
reverse dipping mirror
tinted windows etc etc etc
36k miles
over the market average I know but with the extra spec I think it is worthwhile to pay extra, brings the car way up to date once I have added a few things.
incidentally the dealer had the car for 4 days and had 3 people very interested in it and one was going to travel 300 miles next day to poss buy so I snapped it up.
this was way up in the sticks as well in inverurie and a small garage although they sensibly advertise on autotrader.
what I found by searching for the right spec every day for a month was if a good low mileage one came up people where going for it straight away.
lots out there with high mileages on them, in fact I nearly bought a mk6 red 1 year old for £16k but to be honest when I compared the basic stock spec of that price on the mk6 then looked at what I could get for that money on the mk5 with the added spec above then really tbh the mk5 was the better deal.
apart from the sound deadening windscreen and sound reducing wing mirrors, and also the sound generator under the bonnet on the mk6 there really isn't much else it does better than the mk5,
oh nearly forgot it has 10bhp more
I will spend a few grand on my car to make it the high spec I want, reversing cameras etc etc etc and at the end of the day I will have a spec that will be higher than the mk6 and mk7 as all I could afford if I wanted a mk7 for example would be a basic spec model and that's no fun.
sell on values will always drop especially when a new model comes out but the gti is a sought after car especially if you have a good one and the mk7 is a bit to like the mk6 gti with the European look which has lost a lot of its aggressive features.
last thing, I have had my car 2 months now and got offered £13500 by my neighbour if I wanted to sell and another friend says he would match it if I wanted to sell.
most of my mods are removable like rns 510, mk6 reverse cam etc so I could always take these out and sell on seperatelly but it took me a lot of searching for this car and it aint going nowhere
long live the mk5,,,,, well for a few years anyway lol  :happy2:

I definitely prefer the idea of finding a really good mk5 with low mileage rather than go for a lower spec mk6 if they start to drop in price. I much prefer the mk5 styling, especially the front - much nicer looking car to my eyes.

Sounds like you picked up a lovely motor Scott. And having the feeling that you have the 'right' car is worth a lot more than a few hundred quid.

My quest continues!

I traded my '07 Mk5 DSG GTI with only 27k miles two weeks ago. I got £9,600 for it. It's still sitting on the dealer's forecourt priced at £10,495.

cheers for that mate, tbh I would say wait until the mk7 is launched as the mk5 will come down but I don't think the price will move at all.
I really really wanted bi xenon lights and got lucky finding one,,,, will never own a car again without them they are that good, vision is doubled and they look way classier.
where are you based about ?
mk6 and mk 7 front end look the same as the base model, only gti badge on front is diff and very slight diff grill, I have a pic in my phone of a base model mk6 and a gti mk6 right next to each other at vw dealer, both with price tags and I tell you there aint much diff from the front.
my silly comp cant find my Bluetooth as I was going to add a pic, pity as it is a great pic.
if you want to pm me your moby no I will send you the pic though.
good luck on the searching dude and keep the thread going  :happy2: :driver:

I also prefer the mk5 to the mk6, the mk6 looks kind of less aggresive and more OAP.   The mk5 has definately a nicer front.  Im still looking for mine everyday but its not easy looking for the right spec: 3 door black manual with cloth seats at 6k....

I wouldnt pay over the top though for low mileage as as soon as the mileage goes up i would lose so much when selling on.

I need to drive one soon, my cousin has just bought one and will drive his, he used to have a boxster and says his golf is such a nice car!

keep looking buddy, mileage was a must for me but my budget was admitingly higher, I needed something newish for the kids safety.
when I took my car for a warranty pre check the guy came back 15 minutes later and just said - just like new lol,,,, was well impressed.
also when I bought it I had 9 months mot on it but I ran it through a fresh mot the same day for peace of mind before I put my kids in it,,,, should have seen the guys face who sold me the car when I said I was off to get an mot lol he thought I was mad,,,,, I used to sell cars lol and I don't trust a salesman.
my cars spec is at the bottom, wont be doing any engine mods, the gti doesn't really need it

Yeah sounds like a real nice one Scott with all the options you could ever want!  :happy2:  How do you find the ride quality with the 18 monzas?

You say about subtle customisations, does that mean you will go to stage 1?

Yes i will keep looking, theres a couple just come up on Autotrader with right spec but over 200 miles away from me! I dont mind travelling but going over 200 miles and the possibility of not being the right car for some reason puts me off.

Will also keep looking on the classifieds here.

hi buddy, don't know about stage 1 or re-map, with saying subtle customisations I guess I mean things like the rnh510 unit, mk6 camera, inner trim mods, instead of engine remaps etc,,,,
there is still a few basic things I want to do before maybe getting that done, things like drl's, maybe do something to the front grill's, darker tints on windows, I have inside led's but still to fit them, interior r32 clocks, probably rear cluster light swap for led's or r32 ones,,, things like that - kind of oem upgrades picked from the mk6 or r32 where I can see it will enhance the car.
when I got the 510 audio unit done recently I also got the Bluetooth hidden and the voice activated call system all totally hidden and all vw patrts,, cant stand things like a tom tom and a parrot hanging from the dash board.
the mk6 rear view camera is also a brilliant system but a pig to install
