Gear box stuff
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:00:01 pm »
Recently I am noticing more noise coming from the gear stick/box area particulary when drawling in traffic slowly, like a winning noise I think. How do I check the oil? Any ideas/experiences of his? My clutch needs changing so could this be why? Any info welcomed!!!

To be honest it could be anything. Is your clutch slipping? Is your car due its 4 year/60k Cambelt and Waterpump change?

Not slipping just yet, it's on 98k so got its belt and pump done. When does the manual gearbox oil need changing as perhaps this is the issue maybe???

I've read somewhere that its not a big job to have the gearbox oil changed and not overly expensive either. Hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about will be along to help you out. Have you tried the VW main dealers?

EDIT: if its a DSG, will need an oil change every 40k miles. Dealers charge £179 plus filter change.

VW say the gear box oil should last the life of the car, however if it's been crunched a lot, it's probably worth a flush and replacing  :happy2:

if you want to try changing the gearbox oil then it isnt a big job at all, but unless you have a pump to fill it back up, i recommend having a long tube with a funnel on the end so you can feed it down through the engine bay to the gearbox filler, that is the most awkward part, but not difficult at all, could be done in 30 minutes, even with time for a brew

I did it without any tubes. Undo the filler plug and put the VW gearbox oil in, it has a pull out nozzle which you can place in the filler then squeeze out the oil. It takes 2.3l IIRC.

My box is whining, I think it's diff bearings. Driving me mad at the moment. I can't get a smooth shift at all and the clutch snatches like mad. Terrible.

Sounds more like worn input shaft bearings.  Very common on the 02Q box.

Ah right, would it be a box rebuild either way? Is this still possible on an 06 with 47k?
