Golf GTI 300bhp-how much?
« on: November 21, 2012, 09:51:46 am »
Hi Folks

Have been looking for a standard GTI for a while now with the intention of a few mods and was just wondering how much it would cost me in upgrades to get a good 300bhp from a standard car.  I know its easier to buy a ED30 and remap it but they are a bit out of my price range at 10k at them moment.  Any thoughts?

Cheers

You will struggle to get 300BHP from the standard GTI with K03 Turbo, more like 250 - 270 tops   :pomppomp:
MK6 GTI CSG | Revo Stage 2 | Revo Stage 2 Intake | VWR SubFrame Mount | VibraTechnics Upper Engine Mount | VibraTechnic Transmission Mount | SuperPro Anti Lift Kit | H&R ARB's | Bilstein B12 | TT Short Shifter |Mintex M1144 Race Pads | HEL Braided Lines |

MK5 GTI - DSG + Extras (Sold because DSG was Soooo Boring !!!)

It would cost a few grand for a normal GTI, Air intake, remap, exhaust, HPFP... approx 280bhp - 290bhp

But with the ED30 a remap would get you near 300 bhp + your getting the ED30 extras...
If it's not broke, Mod it.....

Silver is the way !

Mazza as others have already stated better holding on for an ed30,not only does it give you more scope for modding in the future ,the internals are stronger than the k03 car,i have a gti k03 at moment and have spent in the regions of £3k to get to 300bhp ish but had to go the long and costly road of upgrading turbo to k04,s3 injectors, extra cooling forge twintercooler, more air  itg cai,and to be pretty honest m8,its not been without its hassels along the way,so imo for what i have had to spend so far i would of been better of just waiting for an edition 30 and just then a simple stage 1 remap  (revo)and performance panel filter=300bhp.you will also have to take into account that with bigger power comes greater stopping distance hence uprated brakes,i went for the awesome s3 set up as i have no intention of tracking her ideal for road use,and it goes on lol :drinking:

Hi guys, thanks for the advice, Dougie thanks for the info, your car sounds just about what i want?  Wanna sell   I understand it might be easier to wait for a Ed30.  The only thing is i dont like about them is the wheels and the half leather interior, prefer the cloth seats in standard gti, suppose if i bought one i could swap them.  Do you think Ed30 will be coming down in price?

Aaaah what do i do?  buy a standard gti and then sell in a few years and get a ed30 or wait....decisions

Why 300bhp? Not really important IMHO.

Get the a car you can afford and go from there. If you can afford an Eddy, all the better and a stage 1 tune alone with no additional modifications will give you a whole world of difference. If not, get an early GTI and the money saved will give you a good head start in modifying the car to your own personal specifications. If 300bhp is your ultimate goal then look for a DSG car as it will save you £1k+ in a clutch alone if your going to go Stage 2+.

300bhp isn't the be all and end all. If a GTI is well within budget then it is a very capable car in K03 form. Even more so once tuned. Ours is stage 1 at the minute and I am surprised how quick it feels due to the way the K03 spools up so quickly.

300bhp is just a number for pub bragging

Drivability and power throughout the rev range is what you want.

Cheapest way to 300bhp is a k04 turbo, DV relocation & discharge pipe, exhaust downpipe / decat (or sports cat) panel filter and a proper custom map. The standard injectors can flow 300bhp so that's all you need. . .  :happy2:

That should just nudge 300bhp, failing that, a K&N typhoon (cheapest induction kit) will do it

(out of the box maps such as revo or superchips will require upgraded injectors)

I think coming from 400bhp m5 i will not be happy with just standard gti but a remap may be just enough, i havent driven a standard mk5 yet so i may be impressed with it anyway.  Do you guys with 300bhp get any torque steer?  Is it quite easy to put the power down?

E30 DOM i would love to have your car but a bit beyond my budget :P

I drove my brother's E39 M5 and wasn't that impressed with it, must be the bulk... There's hardly any torque steer and only issue getting power down is in the wet, you just learn to modulate the power...

How far's a bit? ;)

The power delivery in the M5 is very linear so there is no spike just a constant surge and due to the size also its deceptively fast, you dont notice the speed your doing until you look at the speedo and think i better keep hold of my licence now :scared:

Its good to hear that torque steer is not a problem!

How far's a bit?....its about 4k  :P

My search continues......................

Have a look at this thread to see how a GTI with KO3 was modded close to 300 BHP:
