Door not closing with nice 'thud', ...
« on: November 26, 2012, 11:42:43 pm »
... it's more of a 'boing'!

It's the drivers door of my new 3dr ED30.

From the inside I get a kind of rattle/vibration when I close it. I've had the door card off but can't find anything obvious. However, I've just discovered that it's not there if the window is open, even by just a few mm.

Anybody had this and know a solution, please?

It's embarrassing. Sounds more like a Ford than a VW! :surprised:

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

Yep sounds like its dropped a tiny bit and the latch isn't hitting the striker in the centre

Exactly!!

It doesn't sound like a golf. Not on the drivers side, anyway.

As for the door being misaligned, what about the window thing? It's not half as bad with the window open a tiny bit. I kind of assumed it was something to do with the window mechanism rattling.

Anyhow, I'll try adjusting the door striker. Any tips?

Thanks for the help.

Cheers

Its nothing to do with the door striker, as you say its not as bad with the window open, its to do with the window it may not be tight enough against the door so it moves a bit either side when you shut the door.  Open the window slightly and then try to move it either side to see if there is play, it might need slight adjusting.

Ah ha! Thanks mazza, that sounds more like it.

So, is it just a case of adjusting the window as per the workshop manual?

BTW, I'm sure you've all seen this, but just in case, I found this - http://volkswagen.workshop-manuals.com/golf-mk5/index.php. Much easier to use than Elsawin.

Hi Xizor,

Yes take a look at the door assembly in the manual, before you start taking the door card out check if the rubber seal on the outside is properly in place against the window.  If it is then it will likely be play in one of the window assembly components or just very slightl adjustment needed.    :happy2:

I've had a fiddle with the window and it seems firm enough. There's a bit of side to side movement, but not much. All the rubbers are firmly in place as well.
I discovered that just tapping the window down switch to take up the slack in the cables also stops the rattle.
I'll try adjusting it when we get a bit of dry/warmer weather. Maybe something is loose.

Cheers
