Tapping
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:19:49 pm »

At present when my car is idling it makes a fluttery/tapping noise I think is coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. It stops when I press the clutch pedal down, anyone know what this is a sign of by any chance?
I know I need a new clutch but just want to check if this is doing more damage etc?

have used the search option on the forum and DMF is often mentioned as a possibility, anyone experienced this fluttering/tapping noise and how did you fix it?

How bad is it?  These TFSI engines are seriously tappety beasts, sound like diesels most of the time.

Whilst stationery, if you pop it in the 3rd, handbrake on, and slowly release the clutch (not fully you'll stall), does the clutch slip or does the car pull against the handbrake?

If it isn't directly effecting your drive it sounds very much like a worn clutch / release bearings / dmf etc.  all solved by replacing... but why do that until it really needs doing?

Of course that's all imho :)

Have you got Full SH with up to date Cam belt and tensioner, water pump etc?

Great, as long as you have FSH, I "think" VW will cover the cam follower to 120k miles. http://changegears.wordpress.com/2012/01/13/camshaft-and-cam-follower-warranty-extension/

Although if your tuning then it's wise to have it checked / replaced.

It's reasonably simple

>Depressure fuel system
>REmove Fuel pump
>Check / replace cam follower

there are more steps but that's the jist of it.
