Which diff????
« on: November 30, 2012, 11:01:07 am »
Looking into getting a diff after xmas and was wondering which one (of the ones that are running them) can give an honest interpretation of what they are like. If their not what you expected or dont work as good as you would have thought i would like to know, rather than spunk a boat load of cash up the wall.

Not bothered about price but would like to know best vfm.

Thanks in advance Gaz

I am running the Quaife and pretty happy with it. I changed my clutch at the same time so extra labour was small compared to doing the job just for changing the diff over. Straight line traction has improved a decent amount but the main benefit is powering through corners, I found it holds the car in so much more. In the wet the front gripped almost as well as the dry pre diff which says a lot. You still need to drive it with a certain precision as it won't stop you front lighting the front wheels up if you plant your foot to the floor mid corner.

I'm happy I went for it and if I were to get another FWD it would be in my top 3 things to do. Of course this is all my opinion, the review Robin did on the Quaife diff is a very good read and loads of decent opinions on that thread too.

Although I have the Quaife (since November 2008), I reckon that the Wavetrac is a serious contender. It's supposed to have an advantage over the Quaife. However, after thousands of miles on my Quaife (DSG version) I have absolutely no complaints and think it is an excellent mod.

Any talk about a diff being only good for track is rubbish, IMO. Your car doesn't know whether it's being driven fast on a road or a track and the diff simply responds to the conditions and how the car is being driven. There are plenty of circumstances on a road when the diff will react without you behaving as if you were racing other cars.

Most people are reluctant to spend the cost of installing a diff as a mod because it's not one you can remove and sell on later (assuming that's your inclination).

If you plan to keep your car and you enjoy spirited driving whether on road or a trackday, I recommend it without hesitation. You get used to it pretty quickly and you still need to take care when driving and stay away from the limits but it extends your car's limits. It's also a mod which contributes a lot to the overall package of a power modded FWD car.

The fact that Volkswagen have now introduced either a diff or their equivalent as OEM must tell everyone that there's a need.

I can only advise you on this Gaz....The Quaife was probably one of - if not THE best mod I had on my ED30. You can tell the difference and if you want to do trackdays with a powerful FWD car you NEED to do this mod to get the best from it. :happy2:

Statllers would be able to fit it in a day too

Hope it doesn't appear like I am sitting on the fence with this one!

Thanks for the advice. I think the general concensus is the quaife then. Anyone know who supplies them, are they direct from quaife? Price? Thanks all for spending more of my hard earned  :drinking:
