I'd recommend doing a search as this thread will end up going like this:

1) few people saying their thoughts
2) someone will slate R32
3) someone with R32 will retaliate
4) will go on like that for a bit

Love my Gti, however, I've seen a 2006 r32 which I like the look of, is their much difference apart from engine note and slightly better speed?

3.2 litre n/a V6 engine
Haldex 4wd
Bigger discs & calipers
Different styling-alloys,bodykit,front & rear valances
Xenon lights standard
Different exhaust
Different interior
I think it sits lower, but not 100% sure...

Having owned both a Gti Ed30 and an R32 i think i can probably help here ...

Ed30 - easier to tune for bhp, lighter. Cheaper tax, insurance and slightly better on fuel (i averaged 29mpg). However brakes are very poor, it sounds like a dishwasher and it understeers for england when pushing on. Ed30 is also pretty expensive for the age due to the 'scene tax' and most are quite poorly specced (esp. the Gti).

R32 - not really tuneable, heavy. Expensive tax, insurance and mpg is generally worse (i average 27mpg). However, the brakes are considerably better than the Ed30, its sounds incredible and imho handles a bit better as you can use the rear end to quell the understeer slighly (more so with a Haldex controller). As most people are afraid of the perceived running costs, they are much better VFM than the Gti and usually come better specced.

My opinion?

If you want to extensively modify (esp. for power), buy a Gti. Plenty of bits to change, that imho, really do need changing.
If you want a nice sounding daily/cruiser that you dont have to pour money at, buy an R32. Its a hot hatch alternative to a 330i.

Compared to something by RenaultSport, neither are paricularly good drivers cars, so id prefer the one with the engine that suits the lazy character of the car, which imho is the R32. This is a Gti forum however, so most will disagree

Looking at some of the comments already, I'm worried that this forum is getting like Civic Type-R owners. Heaven forbid

As above, Ed30 will trounce the R32 on the straights but lose it in the corners. Depends on your requirements. I would recommend test driving one before making a decision. If looking at standard GTI, IMO it won't hold up against an R32.

Having owned all 3 also... I agree with this. If I could pick one to drive everyday then it would be the R32. Unfortunately running costs play a part and due to the high miles I do its not an option. Thats why I drive a Ed30. hope that helps

can somebody please explain why r32 would handle better then GTI/Ed30? I am not talking about grip which is undeniable. For r32 you have to shift those bigger weight around which surely is never good for handling
