Ed30 vs. Standard GTI - remapping costs?

Hi guys,

I'm currently deciding between a standard GTi or an Ed30 (or an R32...but probably not). I'm also deciding between DSG and manual, but that's a whooooole other story :)

Anyway, I like the idea of the Ed30 because I've got an Audi S3 8L at the moment which uses the K04 turbo, so I know about them. The standard GTi just has a K03s if I'm correct. So, that being said, are modifications (remaps,exhausts etc) more expensive and more difficult to get hold of because of the different (and larger) turbo on the Ed30?

I guess that suspension components, gearboxes are the same for both vehicles?

Last question :) What's the last year of production for the standard GTi and the Ed30?

Mods and remaps cost the same for GTI and Ed30. If there are any cost differences on some aftermarket products they are insignificant and I can't think of a single one - Air intake perhaps?

Suspension, gearbox, brakes, are the same on both models.

The K04 in your current car is different to the K04 in the ED30  :happy2:

The ED30 and standard GTI mods are generally identical between the two for key stuff on the TFSI engine.

For tuning the ED30 is the one to go for IMHO  :smiley:

Thanks guys. Yeah I agree, the Ed30 will have much more headroom for tuning. Regarding gearboxes; I personally prefer the manual - but I hear it will need an upgrade if I do anything more than Stage 1 remap?

The K04 on my Audi is a K04-022; what's the one on the Ed30? I've got a rebuild kit (seals, bearings) for my K04 turbo which I BELIEVE is universal for all K04 turbos...correct? :)

Only the clutch will need an upgrade, it will almost certainly slip after a remap  :sad1:

If not straight away, it will after a few months  :grin:

DSG gearboxes & clutch packs can take 450bhp + before slipping

How very annoying...Also annoying is my recently discovered fact that the N249 sensor is located on the actual turbo housing for this engine? N249 delete was a common mod on the S3's...guess that's not the case on the MK5s?

K04-064 in the ed30 The manifold is integrated.

If funds allow and your into modding, then definitely go for the Ed.30 (K04), stage 1 gives you 300bhp+, something your realistically not going to get from a normal GTI (K03). period; it just can't push enough air.

However, the normal GTI (K03) is still a great FWD car, and Stage 1/2 is decently rapid 250/270bhp; through the corners will keep up with a higher power K04 without handling modifications, due to grip.

I'm sure I would eventually end up modding the car, hence which it would be nice to have the inherent head room of the K04 - however I've heard even at Stage 1 for a manual gearbox it will start to slip?... :S

Edition 30 Everytime. More tuning potential & looks better too IMO

Really?

My own Stage 2+ GTI K03 was making 181kw's at the front wheels and clutch never slipped in 2 years.
I have a friend with a ED30 Running every single APR add on, use to make 200kw's the wheels. New tune now around the 220-230kw at the front treads. Almost 50000km's later and does a lot of track work. Never had a clutch issue, ever.

I guess it really comes down to how to the clutch was used by previous owners?

Like most, I too would choose the ED30 over GTI or R32.

I ran a PDT Stage 1 K03 from Sept 11 to June 12, and since July I've been running a different K03 GTi with Revo Stage 1, and I've never experienced the clutch slipping, and I don't hold back, if you get my meaning! (When conditions are safe, you understand).

Fun Golf: 2016 mk7 R DSG 3 door. Work Golf: 2015 mk7 1.4 TSI GT ACT 5 door.
