Remote Engine Start.
« on: December 04, 2012, 02:09:18 pm »
Wondering if anyone has retro fitted an OEM style remote engine start on their MK5?

Incredibly handy when you have heated seats too.

There seem to be some cheap kits on ebay but ideally would like it to work off my key fob rather than having a separate remote. That said I would probably only ever use it in the mornings before leaving home.

I had remote start on my old S3, as you say really useful in the cold winter months, or just to make people look in the multi story. Would defiantly be interested in remote starting again especially if more of an OEM style. Will be interested to see what people have to share

They are usually set up so the doors remain locked, only start when not in gear and if a pedal is touched the engine cuts out. Was on a friends old astra years ago!

The one in my s3 would stall if you even touched the brake pedal whilst remote started without the key in. Although not total sure if its 100% security proof  :driver:

Some aftermarket alarms come with this, but thought insurance would be an issue.

Its very simple .We have them on police cars so you can lock the engine running while at Serious Collisions where the lights used to drain the battery. They generally come on aftermarket alarms as has been mentioned here . I would suggest that it could only be done with an aftermarket alarm/addition . Under £100 i'd have one , but they are generally alot more cash .

Interesting....

surely you could just get a cheap alarm with remote start off ebay. Dont wire in the alarm part but use the remote start feature.

Youd have to unlock the car with the vw keyfob to disable the alarm and then use the aftermarket alarm remote to start the car. Then surely it will have a cut out feed... wire this into the brake light to cut the engine (as long as when deactivated it doesnt cut the engine every time you hit the brakes!!  :fighting: :driver:

Only problem might be if the key needs to be i the ignition for immobiliser reasons?

For this you need remote start module/alarm, immobiliser bypass module(key kept in box) hidden away in car. Last but not least yo . Need a Canbus converter which gives correct wires for remote start and immobiliser bypass
