....That looks pretty cool but, functionally because boost displays its value extremely quickly I would much rather have it in line of sight while driving. Also, like a wrist watch, analogue display is usually more quickly and easily read by the human brain. It's more effective to abstractly read just the angle of a clock's arm to get the information than to read just numbers. IMO.

^ To illustrate line of sight on instrumentation while driving.

I have a newsouth boost gauge and this:

http://www.newsouthperformance.com/pod029.htm

....Doesn't fitting those result in not being able to use the 'ashtray' compartment?

Also, personally, I don't want to be looking down at my boost gauge in the depths of my car. It would be good for an oil temperature gauge though which you don't need to check so often nor while on the move.

TBH when i need to look at the boost gauge (when im troubleshooting or checking everything is ok) i always have my eyes on the road and get a passenger to do it, but i do agree its not in the best position for glancing. I just wanted a OEM look, and someone looking through the windows can easily see a pod above my steering wheel.

Also i can still use the 12v plug and store things in the ash tray just not cover it up.

....Good to know that the 'ashtray' compartment is still usable  :happy2:

Having experienced a turbo failure (cracked wastegate) I find that I want to be able to safely glance at my boost gauge occasionally while driving, just to be able to monitor that all is behaving as it should. I used to have my boost gauge fitted in the air vent but moved it. I always monitor the rev counter and boost gauge whenever I start up the engine from cold - Also the temperature gauge although it's only water temp on the Mk5 GTI.

i think the bars at the top with the lights to the right are the boost gauge RR. so you do have an analogue reading, just not in circular form. i really want one!

....It's certainly in-yer-face but needs to be easily read while on the road (or track) and it is very good from that point of view.

Cmdrfire has both his Defi gauges mounted in the same position and having been in the car it does make a lot of sense, especially at night. However, some folks like to hide what they've got fitted - It's what best suits the individual.

....That's the same as 'ribbon' bar levels on sound monitoring gear - The professionals prefer the old fashioned VU meters - I wonder why!

In fact, Waves, who are acknowledged masters of software sound editing plug-ins, use VU meter styles.

And what kind of instrumentation style do you see in aircraft? - Not bar ribbons. There's good reason and it's how the human brain most quickly can process the information.

but i'm not flying an aircraft, i don't need to be able to make millisecond by millisecond readings in information! at the end of the day, the car doesn't currently have a boost gauge. any gauge is better than none and for my particular usage i don't feel that taking looks into account is necessarily to my detriment.

I was thinking about a liquid gauge to replace one of the centre ones. But this is sweet too

....I was only using the aircraft example to illustrate how ergonomic design takes into account human factors wherever it's applied. Whatever machine you are controlling, whether an aircraft or a motor vehicle, or a kitchen appliance, the same design considerations apply when the aim is to achieve the most efficient and safe operation.

You can't dismiss or ignore the known ways in which humans operate. Well, correction, you can ignore it all and merely be concerned about how equipment aesthetically looks to others, as you appear to prefer to do. Of course, well designed functional equipemt can also look good but aesthetics alone render something limited. There's nothing wrong with your attitude towards such things but, in my opinion, you are missing out.

I've got this gauge fitted. Seems accurate and has been in with no issues for probably 18months

Same as what I had, ran it for 2 years with no trouble  :happy2:
