Looks like a fair amount of tread left 5mm+

As reference I paid £100 a tyre for the 225/40/18 Goodyear Ultragrip which was a decent price... so £400 for a set of wheels and tyres is pretty good, especially because you don't have to pay for tyre fitting... as long as they fit ok.. go for it :)

Might look pretty cool.. I'm not very good at photo manipulation, but gives you an idea.. haha go for it, and post some pics up.

hmm I cant decide if that actually looks ok or really bad lol
im also thinking how much money somewhere like Halfords would be for a set of 16 wheels with tyre package, needs to be decent tyres though, not sure what they stock

I'm running 16" alloys with 205/55/16 continental winter contacts

There is only a few mm of Clarence between the front caliper and the wheels but there are no issues

.
Those steelies with so many holes are definitely cool and who cares what they look like anyway when all that's important is you and your family's safety in snow conditions.

Besides, if their look bothered you, you could always paint them silver or even a bright colour.

A friend of mine with a highly modified Mk4 R32 (and who loves snow and snowboarding) has been trying to get that style of steelie but with more width than standard.

thanks guys, in your opinion every inch I drop down from 18 to 16 increases the grip in the snow with the right tyres ?
is that right,
also any ideas if the tyres in the picture are a decent tread pattern ?
he says they where only on last winter for 2 months and only dirty as in the garage
thanks again

since I need them fitted urgently what kind of quality of tyre would I get in Halfords if I bought a complete set of wheels with tyres as they are always selling them, do they do premium brands in there ?

A skinner tyre will be better for getting through the snow to get some traction, as it's the same weight over less area.

Overall though, I think the biggest noticable difference is the switch from summer to winter tyres due to teh compound change.

I can't see you pricing a set of 16's with decent winter rubber for less than double what your looking at.

Get him down to £350, and it's a steel imo (pun intended)  :driver:
Or get some 225/40/18 winter tyres :)

Can you not ask the garage to measure the tread depth for you?

As above make an offer for them

When I was Looking for winters the beat new price I could get for steels and budget winter tyres was £450 for my tyres
If you get them for £350 and they have a decent depth it's a bargain
