« on: December 05, 2012, 07:59:49 pm »
Guys I have an 09 TFsi Gti that I have owned for two months it went into the garage I bought it from for some post pick up items and they also did a full health check. Basically in the month or so since my engine has used 1.5 ltrs of oil!! There is no leak and I havent seen any smoke! What could it be? It is under s warrenty and so far they have been good with customer service but they are not a vw garage!!

Providing it doesn't use more than 1litres every 600miles your within vw tolerance.

Some gti's use a lot of oil.  Do a search and you will have plenty of reading obviously the subject.

Mine used a lot after the 4th service but since has been fine

Hi

Firstly - How many miles does a month equate to?

Many TFSI engines are reported to have higher than expected oil consumption and if you simply google 'TFSI oil consumption' you will be greeted with many owners who have asked the same question as you.

For your awareness VW consider a Quart in 600 miles to be within normal levels...for me that is a laughable consumption rate. So they are covered in this respect...

Here are some possibilities as to why this may be happening (but it may be none of these so please dont panic ):

  • Faulty Crankcase ventilation (PCV valve) - head over to here to learn more http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,44709.0.html
  • Excessive Internal vacuum within the engine? This links back in with the PCV valve.
  • Worn piston ring/rings
  • Faulty exhaust valves/ valve stem seals - However you would probably see smoke if this was the case.
  • Could also be how the engine was run in - A new engine being babied will not help with oil consumption.

There are a number of other areas oil consumption could be a result of, so this list is not exhaustive!

There is a possibility your car will use half as much oil if you only fill half way between min and max on the dipstick as opposed to brimming - why not try it out?

I would also suggest if your car does lots of short journeys, this also seems to increase consumption.

Best thing to do is monitor regularly.

There are many threads on the topic on here as well, for example http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,54093.0.html

If you can tomorrow I would fill the engine to max line (do this slowly e.g in 100 ml increments if required or near full already). Reset your odometer and measure it from there to confirm consumption over the next month.

Do you have a warranty agreement in place? If so you may be able to use this to have the engine looked into but since VW quote 1 litre per 600 miles as normal Im not sure it will work but its worth a try.

The oil will turn black quite rapidly and is this is generally not a concern. I had my oil analyzed and it returned with acceptable contaminants and wear results for the age of the engine.

I use 5w40 oil. Some use 5w30, but in reality this will probably only have a slight improvement on consumption. Just make sure a high quality fully synthetic oil is used (VW spec).

Like most engine problems its a process of elimination, start with checking the small things and build from there. It all comes down to economics - the cost of new rings for example, against the cost of filling your engine with copious amounts of oil...
