1st & 2nd Gears - A bit notchy when cold??
« on: December 06, 2012, 06:18:33 am »
Over the last week or so, when starting from cold, I've noticed that going from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to first, and 3rd to 2nd are a bit notchy, with resistance to getting into gear. Once the car has warmed up though, it's as smooth as Silky the silkworm sleeping in his cashmere-lined sleeping bag.

Anyone got any ideas what this could be? The car is under AA gold warranty.

I think the transmission oil thickens a little when it's cold.

My does the same. I had my gearbox rebuilt with a new second gear, synchro and clutch under warranty becuase it felt notchy when warm. Now like you mine feels a little notchy when cold but when warm I can't fault it. I've put it down to the box and oil being cold.

:happy2: Well hopefully that's what it is. I guess if it was something more sinister it would be like it regardless of temperature. It's only on really cold mornings as well.

Ian,

I've noticed this a bit with mine, although my old Civic Type-R was much worse. Id put it down to the viscocity of the oil when cold  :happy2:

Just like engine oil, gearbox oil is thicker when cold, which is why you should always warm up your engine in your car before performing an oil change as when its warmer, it drains out much easier

Notchy is good. Just imagine you are driving a manual 550 Maranello!

You would need rather a vivid imagination to pull that feat off. You'd be better off imagining its a golf without a notchy gearchange.

Haha, well as a designer I get paid for my imagination, so it must be pretty good

My GTI used to be a bit notchy' from cold Ian, but only in 1st gear (the change from 1st to 2nd specifically).

It's like that in the A3 too. I can't think of too many cars that are vastly different when cold...

If only, although I'd prefer a F355 GTS Andrew
