gti 08, diff people using diff oil gradiants ? who is right
« on: December 07, 2012, 12:58:36 am »
noticed a lot of people still bickering on the right grade of oil to use on a mk5 gti.
some swear by 5w-30,,, others on 5w-40 ?
so what is the right stuff we should be using, and the best stuff to use ?

5w40 is what ive been using for the past 20k miles.

I dont think anyone on here uses 0W40. Most people use 5w30 or 5w40

:signLOL:  So you have read loads of threads where people wont agree on the correct oil....And you created a new one

i prefer to mix them 40% 5w-40, 40% 0w-40 and 10% extra virgin.

By "gradient", I think you mean "grade"

5W 30 Castrol Edge - also what the handbook says, that's what vw will have put in it. Some people use 5w40. . .

The choice is YOURS  :happy2:

IMO, if you're running standard, 5W-30 Longlife is fine. If you're modded, I'd go with AKS's recommendation of 5W-40. IIRC, they're redefining new Longlife standards.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Stick to good quality Fully synthetic oils. I don't think there is much price difference between a 30w and 40w...

The 40w may have an advantage at hotter engine temperatures as it will be less likely to burn off since remapped vehicles typically run hotter.

Oil choice will have a significant impact on the longevity of an engine.

Yes 5w30 is fine.

Either would be fine for that engine.

Enjoy your GTI for what it is, its why you bought it and not a Prius :driver:

What will stop the annoying diesel sound tapping when warm on my GTI? Only does it when warmed up, quiet as mouse from cold
