Overheating

   Hi, I've been lurking on here for a while now and had some excellent reading, this is my first post. Today I drove about 20 miles to a shopping centre and all was fine. I returned to the car about 2hrs later, after five minutes driving on the motorway the check coolant light flashed up and another light telling me to stop, when I looked at the temperature gage it was sat all the way around the gage at the maximum, the finger on the dile could not go any further. :scared: Lucky enough I was close to a service station and pulled in, allowed to cool and topped up the coolant which was below the minimum marker.

    Back on to the motorway and within a mile the same again, so I pulled over onto the hard shoulder and wiated for the RAC. The mechanic topped it back up and checked for leaks but there wasn't any, allowed the car to warm back up and he seems to think that there is a blockage some where as it was loosing it by steem backing up through the resivoir. he told me not to drive it and requested a tow truck.

    Sorry forgot to say it's a 2009/58 Edition 30, had cambelt and water pump  3 months  and 3000 miles ago, at the same time both fans where replaced, big bill I know :sad1: Any ideas please guys to what it can be, I don't fancy another big bill!

Is the coolant a misty colour or still a clear colour. Im thinking possible head gasket failure with the speed of the coolant going down. Failing that you need to check all the hoses and radiator for any leaks. I would also remove the lower half of the cambelt cover to see if the waterpump is leaking. These are a few visual checks I would do before taking it anywhere. Just be careful if you have a cracked head gasket as it may cause damage to the cat convertors by sucking through the coolant into the combustion  cycle and out the exhaust.

Thanks for the quick reply, the coolant looked clear but will double check in the morning when it's light.

don't rule out the water pump --as it might be leeking

Hope it's a simple fix. Don't forget to check for split hoses!
