A creaky front end
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:36:33 pm »
A few weeks back I noticed that the front nearside corner of the leon started to creak a little when going over speed humps. this has now got progressively worse and has spread to the off-side as well.  :scared:

It only happens when going over speed humps, cornering/everthing else seems fine. I thought it might be the front ARB bush’s (Whiteline so I know the bush quality’s not great)? or could it be the springs? I know the only way to really find out is to get underneath and have a look but I thought I'd see if anyone would like to hazard a guess as to what’s causing it.

On my car this was caused by the front bushes on the wishbones.

Mine has started creaking a bit, perhaps it could be the cold weather?  However am I going to change the subframe bolts to the uprated ones soon.

Suspension top mounts are another possibility

That's less of a creak, more of a 'donk' noise in my experience.

I had this on my mk4. Turned out to be ARB bushes.

On my car this was caused by the front bushes on the wishbones.

Mine too. Replaced them with polybushes and has not creaked since  :happy2:

Hi Guys, sorry to resurrect this thread, but anyone know if it's a big and/or expensive job to change the springs, or bushes (if that's the cause)? Ive noticed that my undercarriage is creaking quite a lot lately, and as the author of this thread suggested, more noticeable when i drive over speedbumps, but also when i pull off in 1st from a standing start!! My car is a 2005 GTi, so knocking on a bit i guess, but only 50k miles thus far! My last MOT (last April) highlighted that my springs were rusty/corroding, could this creaking be from that getting worse perhaps!?

Cheers for any advice given

Andrew

HAPPY BIRTHDAY :happy2:

The springs shouldn't cost too much (£200 for a full set) plus a couple of hrs labor to fit. Why not take this opportunity and get some that lower it a bit and tighten up the handling?

Cheers  :drinking:

Done a bit of research on this and me thinks it's pointing towards the ARB, or something literally connected to it, like bushes!? Anyone know if this is a big job, or if i can kill 2 birds with the one stone and get something that not only cures that but also improves handling??

Thanks

Apologies for resurrecting yet again but could a torn and leaking cv boot cause a creaking/clunking under load? Exactly this was discovered on the drivers side last Friday, I'm getting this replaced on Friday btw! Could this perhaps be the reason it's got steadily worse over the past number of mths!?

Small update, got the Leon back today after nearly 2wks in the garage (it wasn't the only thing being worked on) and it was the arb bushes ,all that was needed was some copper grease. Alls good now with the creaking. Also had a full service,  SALK and ferodo ds performance pads fitted plus a fast road alignment. The big cost was my helix clutch was fu(ked....again. First time a return spring became dislodged and jammed in the housing..was I unlucky??? Second time the springs in the cover plate are all uneven and wears unevenly eventually causing first, second and reverse to be unable to be engaged. Im no expert in how clutches work but helix have got a lot to answer for. Oh and I have asked them several times with regard to the first issue with the biggest fob offs ive ever had, bloody useless company...anyway the car feels great and cant wait for a bit of dry weather to give it some real beans through the twisties!
