4WD in my GTI ?
« on: December 11, 2012, 08:45:52 pm »
So basically I've got the chance of a written off R32 with what I would imagine would be most of the parts I would need to 4wd
I've read the feature in vw magazine http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,55009.0.html and it makes it sounds fairly simple

My concern is if it is that simple why are there not more 4wd GTI's out there ?

Does anyone know of any other 4wd GTI's complete or in progress ?
Would really like to get all the info I can before starting ie any potential problems fitment/coding wise  :happy2:

Cheers
Robert

Thanks guys  :drinking:

If I'm honest it will be a new year project myself , I've got a feeling I'm going to have to just crack on and deal with things if and when they arrive .

Just need to gather as much info as I can to try a to keep the turnaround as short as possible

From what I've read on here is that most of it bolts on, I think its the spare wheel well needs to go and a different shaped fuel tank, I could be wrong. Best to speak with alex, I would say james but he's in NZ for a while

I was going to do it,  but it's a much faster car keeping it front wheel drive.  The extra weight spoils the handling.

Four wbeel drive is great for launches.

The TTRS race car that Audi build is converted back into front wheel drive.

you're forgetting you'll need new springs for the back, plus a new exhaust. in all it's not a cheap exercise

^^ This, and also considering the cost of doing it, why you wouldn't Turbo charge a MK5 R32 instead

MyGels cupra is awesome just had a read through the build thread there  :congrats: :congrats:

As far as I'm aware the full running gear is untouched so hopefully I can just swap the complete rear subframe, fuel tanks etc and welding shouldn't be a problem.

Interesting to know about the ttrs race car , but tbh I've just been getting sick of traction or lack of especially in the wet, which in Scotland is most days haha

I'm almost 100% confident I can do this conversion if its as straightforward as it looks for less than it would cost me to buy an S3 , plus I prefer the look of the golf and I 100% know the cars history etc

Don't even need to buy an S3, as there are other "quattro" A3s available.

even diesel ones!
