Have looked into getting an R32 and charging it but the cost to do it right is
I know the OP has already got a written off R32, so this won't help him, but would it not be easier to just drop an ED30 engine into an R32? You would then have a 4WD Golf with a highly tunable lump with surely less modification required?

Wont look as good as a golf though we'll have to agree to disagree on that (Mk6 R does look better than an S3 tho)
so what's faster? a GTI or an R32 or an R32 with a GTI engine or a GTI with an R32 engine?
