I very rarely fill the tank

Perhaps it is just this; are people with bad figures brimming their tanks and just pootling about round town and such?

As I don't do a lot of motorway work, I never really have more than 1/2 tank... just adds unecessary weight that your paying to cart around.

500 from my sooty before the "ping" and the fuel light come on

....It's best not to run your tank right down below about a quarter full so you avoid the 'dregs'. So don't wait for the "ping" and then have to possibly mildly panic.

????
That's a first. That's what the fuel filter is for.

I see you point Robin but on the other hand surely today's modern fuels shouldn't be full of the cr@p they were years ago and tanks are plastic now so dont corrode.

I get around 380 miles per tank - standard 2007 ED30 on Dunlops (summer) and more when running winter tyres - around 400.

....Yes, old habits die hard!

I'm fairly sure that I've seen it mentioned for nowadays too though.

I think I am in the ball park age wise with RR and yes we never ran the tanks down in our 3.0ltr Capri's , Savage Cortina's or Dolomite Sprints guaranteed to suck up crap... :) So still do the same now 1/4 tank fill up or get very nervous....old school.

I look at this the other way round, by constantly running it down low your not getting a build up of cr&p in the bottom of the tank and therefore have no worries about running out of fuel and actually only having about 3/4 of a tank that us "useable".

I replaced the fuel filter on my GTI at around 50k miles and it was fine. Its a cheap and relatively easy job to do, also.

Ive run every car ive ever owned (even 100k + Peugeot diesels) like this and never had a problem.

Modern fuels are much much cleaner than fuels of old and cars have better filters than they used to, so there is much less chance of clogging up your motor.  :happy2:

....Hi Steve and a Very Warm Welcome to the forum!  :drinking:

It appears that I might be losing my crown of being the oldest guy on here - I'm 65yo but 22yo at heart according to several forum folks. Being divorced, the trouble is that I still fancy the 20 and 30-something ladies.

Yes, Old School with fond memories of the cars you mentioned  :happy2:

But I think that Gray's point is valid.

Its both the crud from the bottom of your petrol tank and the crud from the bottom of the garage tanks if they are getting low, I always filled up when it hit the mark under 1/4

However, good to do right before changing the filter, yes?

I live in Cornwall and my drive to work is like 5miles with a lot of hills, starts and stops and a tank will return an awful 250miles from full but I drove to London and back on Tuesday/Wednesday and got about 390 miles from it

Hi RR

Its the old story ... old dogs new tricks :) Agree with the other posts about the fuel tanks and fuel though filters are better and tanks are better so no need to panic at 1/4 tank anymore we are what we are :)
