Which Double Din head unit?
« on: December 14, 2012, 06:25:02 pm »
Hi guys looking to upgrade to a new double din unit.

Budget is £300-350

Must have: - Colour screen 6-7”
                  - DVD playback
                  - USB and Full iPod control

Doesn't need to have SatNav or Bluetooth as I already have the Factory fitted bluetooth module (located under drivers seat)

What would you recommend?

TIA

Hi Guys,

I got the pioneer 2400 BT.

Factory units apparently don't have good amps in them and are only 20w x 4 ?

I was looking at all the options and did not want to shell out the big money for the vw specific kenwood.

Yes i did see a one on ebay for 550 but no warranty?!!?

So i got a brand new 2400 for 250 quid.

Yes i had to have it fitted and mfsw loom etc but its pretty good.

The only thing is radio reception could be better! I am told that because of the diversity aerials in the golf its sometimes dodgy on the reception.

Overall ALOT better than the rcd300 i had in there.

If money no object it would of been the kenny, but not all pockets run that deep!

I would always recommend Alpine in the after market. Great service and great units with loads of features. The latest IVE-W535BT can also be installed to connect up to the MFSW and MFD so you can see track names, phone numbers, etc. on the MFD screen. A little bit over your budget, but what with all the features, it's a bargain.

For the top end, you cannot beat Alpine's INE-W928R VW fit radio. Specifically made for VW, it even comes with fitting kit. But you talking over a £1000 for that.

I have had issues with reception on Pioneer before and actually replaced a 2 month old unit for a customer with an Alpine because of this. Pioneer was his choice originally. He hasn't looked back since. This was on another make of car, not VW.

I've just ordered the Kenwood and am looking to get it fitted soon - does anyone know if an ariel adapter is required with a vw specific unit? Is so which one do I need? Or is it better to replace the entire ariel?
Has anyone experience and solved reception problems on an aftermarket unit?
Cheers

what are the normal speaker like on this head unit? Do you have a sub fitted. Im going to get mine fitted at the weekend, the guy in the shop said the 10 speakers wont need upgrading as long as you have a sub, he said it would take the strain off them and would sound sweet ( he has a GTI as well) so kinda trust him

Love my pioneer unit avh8400BT

Perfect iPod control and has advanced app mode on it the same as the pioneer appradio. The pioneer appradio wasn't highly rated at all. But mine has the best parts of a normal double din unit as well.
