Sad news, but a sign of the times. And with no WRC programme to attract buyers, it was only a matter of time before Subaru followed Mitsubishi out of AWD turbo cars.

8 years of Impreza driving. I still find my eye (and ear) drawn to them. The '05 was the last 'handsome' car in my opinion. However I was followed by a new shape '09 today and it still has a certain something.

But I wouldn't go back to my STi from the GTI. But I'm damn glad I owned two of them.

The last of the road-going rally cars is gone. The King is dead.

Since when did Mitsubishi pull out of AWD turbo cars???    :confused:

So the original has standed the test of time.

I think every petrol head should own a scooby or Evo at some point though. Just a shame insurance on one is silly

I sort of feel the same. I've never coveted one. Despite the performance they're just not desirable. They have a very "boy racer" image to them.

I test drove a WR1 and wasn't impressed. The handling was good, but everything else wasn't.

You can still buy a VW 2.0 AWD car though.  :wink:

I test drove one back in about 1997.
The only car they had that I could drive was 3 years old and had done 60k but was as tight as a drum which impressed me. It's turbo lag didn't but when it picked itself up it went like a stabbed rat.

Oh well.

Sad time.
I still remember when the first brand new turbo one came into our familys subaru dealership to replace the legacy turbo. The time before anyone really knew what they were or the chavs and maxpower got them.
 I still think the legacy turbo was a better car though.

There good cars,  my dad has  1999 turbo impreza,  only thing that's ever gone wrong is the rad leaked,  he's owned it 7 years now, I think the sound is great, far more fun being a caged impreza with a chav system on it than these new things that's about now, it's just a shame the moment you put morsels than 5hp over standard the bottom end goes  :signLOL:
I'd love one tho, apparently there's a special jap import only model that actually has a good engine that lasts!  I'd have one of these if I had 30k  :stupid:

350bhp easally achievable  :party: for very little money...
in 97 JDM WRX STi's came with 5 station switchable diff lock - water injection and the most identifiable sound track ever (possible exception flat plane crank V8)
Along with the Evo program Singly responsible for re igniting the tuning industry...

I never owned a scobby but did own a evo for a bit and lovvvvvved! Rapid as feck! Sounds like I would have loved a impreza too :( sad times.

I've owned 4 Subaru's and I was of they very first to own the redesigned 2003 "Blobeye" Type UK STI. I had it for 4 years and then picked up a 2006 JDM Hawkeye STI

I loved my scoobies but day to day I prefer driving my ED30.

I do miss the power I had and the sure-footedness, it never ran out of grip.  I had only changed the exhaust, panel filter and remap and she made 350bhp/365torque.
When I put the power down, all of it transfered to the road without any wheel spin.
That is the one thing i miss in my ED30 and why I am looking to getting a Golf R.

But I dont think I would go back.

The servicing wasn't any more expensive than my ED's and the parts were generally cheaper than what is on offer to VAG, the running costs in terms of fuel was a killer.
220 miles out of an 11gallon tank on a run and a lot less for day to day driving.

My friend had an evo 8 and it was a was a different animal. Just as fast and maybe more grippy but mainly because the car did alot for you.
There has always been a huge rivalry between the 2 cars and it generally comes down to a bad driver could go alot faster in an Evo.

But I am happy I made the switch and other than 4 wheel drive, that is all I really miss.

The main killer was the pricing of the car. When I got my 2003 STI I paid 24K for it, the same car now is 34k and isn't really that differently spec'd. Its slower if anything and has the weaker 2.5L engine. Unlike the 2001-2005 and the JDM 2L engine. You also get the 2.5L in the UK Hawkeye and that engine was chocolate!
