Remap on high mileage?
« on: February 03, 2013, 06:45:47 pm »
Hello,

I know this probally has been discussed before but!

Does anyone  have any experiences with a remap on a high mileage tdi.

I've got a  08 mk5 1.9 tdi 105 match with 142000 on the clock.

Looking into remaps but don't really wanna wreck any other parts.

I don't rag it do you think it will be alright?

Cheers :-X

Cars just been serviced and runs ok.

Tuned an A3 today with similar mileage, made 107bhp and 190ftlb stock. Tuned it made 152bhp and 268ftlb

Mileage would not concern me, more the quality of the map.

As PDT says

Providing it's been looked after and well serviced, you should be fine  :happy2:

I imagine a lot of your mileage is motorway? Which is much less stressful for a car than 70k town driving

To be honest I not had the car that long I bought with this milage.

It was a  lease car with full vw service history.

So yeah I would imagine it was motorway use

I don't do a lot of miles myself.

It is tempting:'(

I can vouch for Dave at PDT tunings maps, just sold on my Mk4 Golf TDI 130 which he mapped at 189, transformed the car, same economy and no issues over 35,000 miles, I wouldn't let the mileage put you off. My golf before was on 350,000 you just need to service them regularly and obviously, not drive the pants of it constantly, mechanical sympathy extends the life of a car.

I have no problems with the engine longevity, the issue is more with the clutch.  A remap places more strain on the clutch, so if this is tired it can quickly show itself along with a vibrating DMF.  I've had people that have just asked for the torque to be turned down to stop it vibrating but it's just a band aid and will need replacing soon!

The Awesome GTI remaps are just a cheap generic remap, probably written by some guy in China for all you know.

I'd recomend going to R-Tech, although it will be a bit further (probably an extra £50 in diesel at a guess), they will thoroughly check the car over and do you a proper custom map that is set up exactly how you want, inc datalogging (all included in the price).

Awesome wont check your boost system for leaks (or any of your hardware for faults), they just plug a computer in, upload the map and off you go. . . .

Although you raise concern about the clutch, keep in mind the extra power you have is only there if you're trying to use it... if you dont drive around in general like you stole it and with your foot on the floor then generally speaking it shouldnt cause you any problems. If you decide after the remap you're gonna accelerate from near idle revs in 6th with your foot flat down then you'll probably run in to problems quite quickly.

Also as stated, as long as the car has been well serviced - and being an ex lease car this will have been the case - then you shouldnt have any worries really.

IMO If you have high miles and the car is on its ori turbo and clutch then budget for a new turbo or clutch soon after a remap.  No matter how good the mapping is if the turbo / clutch are on there last legs just adding 100mb more boost could finished them off.   90% of the time there is never no issues and the cars go on happy for 10,000s of miles but there is that 10% which are on there last legs and there is no real way of knowing whats going to happen until you start to tune it.

It makes sense dude.

Its what I tell all my customers, there is no way of knowing if parts are upto the job or not so give them worse case out come.  Its easy to say you will be fine and have no issues and take 290quid off you... but I like to sleep well at night lol
