Outside Temperature bong
« on: December 19, 2012, 08:39:16 pm »
Can VW change/remove the bong when the outside temp (OST) drops below 4dec C.   As it is driving me potty.  Picture this, driving enthusiastically and then all of a sudden hear this bong.  "Whats that!" I wonder.  I slow down and look at the dash, and see the OST has dropped to 4 dec c. Do I really need to be told.  Sorry I digress.  So is it possible to either remove the bong or have it set at 0 dec c?

I've begun to be pre-programmed to ignore the VAG bongs during enthusiastic driving.

However, there may well be somewhere in the depths of VCDS to turn this cr@p off... I'll have a look tomorrow.

The bong is there to warn you that there could be ice on the road as the temperature is low.

I wouldn't be driving enthusiasticly with the possibility of black ice on the roads

Exactly! Some common sense at long last.

Yes, but the question really is why on earth are you driving so fast (in cold conditions) that looking at the dash, where the speedo is, causes your attention to be drawn from the road?

Best engine performance in the cold.

So add that to poor weather conditions on the roads...

What do you get?

A bong on the dash reminding you of the cold conditions?

Wouldn't mind but It's the same bong for low oil, low coolant, and any other thing it warns about! Could be anything happening with it!
How hard can it be?

I thought the 4 degree bong was to make me aware of a better induction charge. I always use this as a sign to speed up! :driver:

....But you're not a computer, you are human and prone to all the human failings which include not always realising just how cold it is outside. In the days before in-car temperature info I've rolled a car on black ice (a long and very amusing story) - Outside temperatures fluctuate and monitoring them with the help of a bong is usually the only way you can be aware of the liklihood.... Unless it's too late!!  :driver:

Many a time have I been driving fast on a cold morning but feeling how my tyres are performing, consequently being very focussed on that and not the gauges, and then the bong alerts me to 4 degrees and I know to slow down and take extra care.

Bear in mind things like aircon won't work below around 4-5*C.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
