Missing Changing Gear?
« on: December 19, 2012, 10:30:04 pm »
Hey up guys. Ive had my GTI just over a month now....its a DSG. Loved the gear box...and i think i still do. Trying to work out if i miss going through the gears on empty sweeping roads.

As much as i love the DSG ( been in 6th gear at 50 cruzing around) cant put my finger on whats missing....Have i made a mistake not getting manual or will this feeling pass?   :stupid:

Only time will tell i guess.....any one in the same boat?

I dont mind up changing with Paddles or trip-tronic, just down shift doesnt feel natural. when using paddle the whole MFD should show what gear yu are in, i know you can tell by the feel, but when changing down 2 or 3 gears going into a corner, would be nice to see it clear, rather than a pissy little number on the MFD

Yeah i know what you mean.... you just have to get used to 'counting' gears and remembering what gear you are in.

Why has no company designed a a dial (same size as a boost gauge ) to show what gear you are in...it would sell like hot cakes....

Im sure its possible. Its a shame like you say, that there is no option for a big number display to show gear number.

.
Whereas a large gear display would be great, can't you tell what's going on by the revs, what you can hear and how the car is behaving?

Just Think Manual and shift gears exactly at the same times you would in a conventional manual transmission. Relying on the torque isn't good for an engine - Don't be lazy and use your gears to the optimum. [Addressing those who don't rather than anyone in particular]

Get it modded for more power, DSG comes into it's own when you've got more boost! :)

where i feel i may miss changing gears, all disappears when 90% of the time on the roads is spent in stop start traffic.

....That's unfortunate that your lifestyle at this time places you in those road circumstances - I sympathise. I'm both lucky and privileged enough to have the opposite and probably only spend less than 5% of journeys in stop-start traffic, but when that happens, DSG is a very big bonus. Location is a big factor.
