Windows 7 or 8
« on: December 21, 2012, 08:36:42 am »
Hi guys.

I'm looking at getting a new laptop. I know macs are much better in every way but I'm now looking for a windows operating system.

I've heard windows 8 is awesome but I've always liked 7. Does anyone have any advice?

I've heard Windows 8 isn't very good but that wasn't the most reliable of sources.

My mate at work did the upgrade and he likes it so who knows.

I think because its a "Bigger" Number then Win8 must be better , thats using my "Knob Length" philosophy

But then using my "0-60 times" philiosophy the lower the number the better , so Win7 !

Although Win8 has some nice touches, they've made some annoying omissions... the feckin' START button for one and shutting down isn't the same (I've retrofitted a shutdown button).

Keep with Win7, you can always upgrade for about £25 if you really feel the need.

Typo? :chicken:

However, yes, stick with Windows 7 until at least the first Service Pack is released for Windows 8.

This may not apply to members here...

I bought my mum a new PC (my phone has a bigger memory than her old computer), and it came with Win8.  Three weeks later, she still couldn't get on with it.  My local computer repair shop owner said he'd had Win8 for a month (of daily use) and was just getting comfortable with it.

The main problem is the tiles on the 'home' screen which hides everything you need.   :fighting2:

I'd say that it works better if you're a facebook and newsfeed addict, but it's totally unsuited to someone who uses a computer mainly at work and just wants a home PC for e-mails and photos.  It's the change from old to new.

Incidentally, I complained to PC World, saying that I'd asked for the equivalent to a new Mini, and they'd sold me a helicopter.  I accepted that they were both capable of getting to the shops, but not with my mother piloting them.  They gave me a full refund!
