Golf 6 2.5
« on: December 21, 2012, 03:17:15 pm »
Greetings
I've come to Vancouver, Canada for Xmas - (my wife's from here) and picked up my rental car from Hertz which this time is a Mk6 Golf 2.5. Funny coming from an Edition 30 how differently they drive despite being essentially the same car.  The engine feels as 'smooth' as 5 cylinders only can - which I'm guessing is the base for the Audi TTRS & RS3? I had an Audi quattro for years and the 5 cylinder is definitely one of my most favourite engines ever. The exhaust note and raspy warble on the over run was fantastic. Did we get this 2.5 in Golf Mk5? What tuning potential?
The car is pretty basic but is quiet and lazy feeling yet its 170bhp feels adequate.
I'm quite impressed!
Happy Christmas everyone. Safe driving over the holiday period and good health and prosperity got 2013.

Hope you have a nice Christmas Paul. The 2.5 didnt make it over here, probably because of the EU emissions nazis.  As the 2.5 is non turbo, i would imagine that tuning is expensive.

Say... when are you getting yours remapped?  :happy2:

Everthing over here, is emissions based... that's one of the reasons the Ford Focus ST went from a 2.5 Turbo 225hp to a 2.0 Turbo 240bhp with less emissions. (iirc)
A TTRS engined Golf R would be fun though.

That engine isn't the turboless TTRS 5 pot, it's a very old legacy of the MK4 Golf. I think there's a few supercharger kits available for LHD versions though.
Sideways yo!

I thought the old mk4 gold had a V5 - a slant 'V' type 5 cylinder engine? This Mk6 has definitely got a straight 'inline' 5.
I'm confused!

Sorry, I meant the US market MK4 Golf/Jetta. I'm sure that had its own I5 engine.

I had a MK4 Golf V5 (later one) which is a 2.3 and produced 170bhp. Not much could be done to these tuning wise other than supercharging which is pretty expensive!

5 cylinder motor sounded lovely and was quicker than the MK4 Golf Gti (Not difficult). Liked the fuel though and road tax was pretty hefty!
