Which engine to choose in new Polo?
« on: December 23, 2012, 10:46:12 am »
Merry Xmas all

My girlfriend is changing jobs and is no longer needing to do so many motorway journeys. Hence she is looking at trading her MK5 140 GT Tdi in for a new shape Polo. No more than £11k

She took a 1.4 out yesterday which was so so. Didn't have others to test. I see they also do a 1.2, 1.2TSI, a 1.4TSI (but only in new GT model and GTi I think, ie too expensive) and a 1.6tdi.

I have experienced the 1.6tdi in the Mk6 Golf and was quite impressed. So question is I guess which is best for everyday use, town/country and occasional motorway use, anyone tried the 1.2tsi and 1.6tdi back to back?

Also anyone know if the 1.6tdi is easily chipped or if there is different hardware in the Polo that stops it putting out the same power as its bigger brother the Golf.

And if anyone fancies a nice black 5 door GT Tdi let me know

Many Thanks

Matt

I only have experience of the 1.2L 60bhp engine in the new Polo, and it was woeful. I'd imagine the small petrol engines (the 1.2TSI sounds interesting) would suit the character of the car more than the 1.6TDI, though I'd agree that it is a nice engine in the Golf.

Cheers Andrew

Just checked Revo site and they can chip the 1.6tdi to 140bhp. Be pretty interesting if mpg isnt affected too badly.

Had a '12 plate 1.4 as a courtesy a few weeks ago.. I simply couldn't live with that few torques everyday.
It would definitely have to be one with forced induction. (to maintain some level of driveability / MPG / emissions etc)

I think I'd also be wary of the weight of that engine in a small car, not so much in terms of performance but how it would effect the handling etc.

I've just been looking at them on the VW configurator and its scary how much a decently spec'd Polo is nowadays!

The Autocar review seems to suggest the 1.6 TDI doesn't particularly suit the Polo -

However, the 1.6-litre diesel engine doesn’t suit the Polo especially well. In such an otherwise quiet and smooth environment the engine sounds and feels startlingly gruff, only becoming less intrusive at a steady cruise.

Quote
Work the five-speed manual gearbox a bit and the Polo is brisk enough, but like many small diesel engines it’s got a massive hole in its power delivery if it’s caught off boost at low revs, which makes it frustrating to drive around town.

Bugger going to have to find the 1.2 tsi and 1.6tdi somewhere to test

Would keep the Golf but she has had it for 3 years now and it has done done 73k miles, so time to move on.

Thanks all for the input.

The lowest powered 1.6d to keep purchase cost down and then a software upgrade to take it to the highest power output +25bhp and 35ftlb.

Thank you I was thinking that... How much do you charge for remap? Noticed Revo quote 140bhp upgrade, would you not recommend that many horses ?

Search for a 1.6tdi SEL in grey with boavista alloys begins.......

1.6cr is £399 inc vat and dyno setup.

Buy the 75ps version and you can upgrade to 130-135 bhp from a stg1 map. Figures vastly depend on how new the engine is, highest we have seen with Sedox software is 138bhp.

I'd defo consider the above.  You always lose money when changing (as you know).

As usual it comes down to how much it costs you to change over anything else.

As others have said it has to be FI these days imo.
