1.6 tdi all the way, great mpg, cheap on tax, the tsi is good but is firsty

The Autocar review seems to suggest the 1.6 TDI doesn't particularly suit the Polo -

However, the 1.6-litre diesel engine doesn’t suit the Polo especially well. In such an otherwise quiet and smooth environment the engine sounds and feels startlingly gruff, only becoming less intrusive at a steady cruise.

Quote
Work the five-speed manual gearbox a bit and the Polo is brisk enough, but like many small diesel engines it’s got a massive hole in its power delivery if it’s caught off boost at low revs, which makes it frustrating to drive around town.
It isn't a quiet engine to be fair, still brill running costs

I didn't think it was bad in the Golf Match I tried it in, but I guess the MK6 has considerably more soundproofing.

The 1.2 Tsi is a laugh to drive, the wife has just got one and she loves it, made me proper laugh the other day on the way home, a surprisingly quick car, we tried the diesel but it just felt too sluggish.

The mrs wants a polo but we only want an auto! leaving us with the choice of the 1.4na or the 1.4tsi. Want to keep mpg as high as possible! Wish they did the 1.6tdi or 1.2tsi with dsg.

I wouldn't touch a diesel in a little car, you want a revvy little petrol. Diesels just rattle the car to bits and make driving them a chore.
Sideways yo!

Done a u-turn. Worked out miles a year and added in miles on motorway and petrol just won. Add in short journeys that the dpf may not like and its definitely the TSI. Just have to get over the rather large financial outlay to 'upgrade' from a nice Golf to a reasonably nice Polo....

I just couldn't do that.

I personally think changing from a MK5 diesel with 73k on the clock to a nippy petrol engined Polo would be a pretty nice change.

It's all personal preference of course.
I guess it depends heavily on the type of driving the OP will be doing, if it's mostly motorway work that zippy little petrol engine is going to be a buzzy PITA quite quickly; and you'd miss the torque.  However, on the flip side if it's mostly town, low speed work then absolutely the little FI petrol polo would be a fun little go cart of a car.

I think you can get the Ibiza 1.2 TSI with DSG.

I had the 1.4N/A DSG as a courtesy when the ED30 was in VW for some work...

Great box but I found the 1.4N/A FAR too underpowered, I would really strugle with it as a every day car..

I have driven 30tkm with my Skoda Octavia combi 1.6 TDI with DSG box. I think the combination is quite good. Economical and in a Polo with a remap, should be a nice little performer. No-one has really praised the 5-speed manual box with this engine but DSG-7 works well with it.

I dunno, 10k can buy a lot of car! Second hand bargains out there.
