The Mark 3 VW Golf GTi has been voted the worst hot hatch of all time by Autocar. They commented:

"...with a pathetic 115bhp, it could barely get out of it's own way"!!  :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:

Fun Golf: 2016 mk7 R DSG 3 door. Work Golf: 2015 mk7 1.4 TSI GT ACT 5 door.

Still a cheap daily.

The 16v is a lot better though. Did they forget about that one?

Great engine in the 16V. I don't think they were referring to that one. One of my mates has one, and I reckon it would win 'Most shiny plastic on dash of a hot hatch' every time! Furthermore, his Mrs can beat him in her Renault Modus!  :ashamed:

Good car nowadays for the money, at the time I hated them, fell out of love between the Mk2 and Mk4's.  :sad1:

Saw DEAKO had bought a nice looking cheap one and thought its a lot of car for the money! Funny how time changes things.

The Mk4 1.8T GTi was poor for a GTi as well. I did 40,000 miles in one. It was a nice, luxury Golf with cracking seats and interior, but was never worthy of the GTi badge. For me, there have only been four (soon to be five) generations of real GTi.

I agree with them, it's just as bad as the mk4, heavy and under powered :happy2:
You do need to take price into consideration tho, they cost naff all and are vw so are still strong and will still be here like the mk1 is, good cheap cars and some are good specs too, just need to be more powerful or loose weight

I liked my mk4 golf 1.8t, if was the longest I'd ever had a car

I agree Greeners, it was a pretty good car, but not good enough in terms of performance and handling to justify the GTi moniker. It used to wallow around corners and roundabouts, and was such a huge dissapointment compared to my Mk2 16V.

And I agree that the 2.0 non-turbo and 1.8 non-turbo 20V were easily as bad as the Mk3 GTi.

Not great to be honest, but it needs a good service and a new crank sensor. But I've vowed not to spend anything on it but petrol. I'll be getting something else in April when I have saved every last penny for our house!!  :wink:

I came to my ED30 from a MK 3 Gti. Terrible Gti, great car ie slow as fook but it was a 95 N with 173,000 on the clock when I got rid and is still going now I think. I think the 16v would have been ok, the vr6 had a terrible power to weight ratio and mpg was dire.
Diamond Black Pearl Edition 30, still going strong but now back to Stg 1

The mk3 GTI and the mk4 GTI are the reasons I defected to their parent brand and I started buying SEATs instead. IMO the ibiza GTI/GTI16v were better than the mk3s and the Leon cupra/cupraR were better than the mk4s
