I was lead to believe the best mk4 was a tdi anniversary? Never seen one myself but looking ebay just now they seem decent and have held there value, how true it is that the tdi was the best mk4 I don't know but I'd be pretty pissed off if a tdi was better than the petrol gti
I didnt like the Mk3 when it came out , but i have to say I do now , its a more interesting car than a Mk4. The best Mk4 GTI was of course a Mk1 Skoda Octavia vRS.

I had one and it was pretty good and faster than the GTi in either 2.0 or 1.8 turbo. The 5 cylinder engine sounded just like an old Audi Quattro!Chopped it in though for a Seat Leon Cupra TDI 150 PD which being the same platform as the mk4 golf still felt better to drive. Loved that car as it gave over 40mpg regardless of how it was driven
