New car but tyre just split !

As title, just had a call from my wife to say that her tyre had a flat, so i go for a look and find this below ?!!.

Now the car only has a 100 miles on the clock, is this a faulty tyre or pothole damage ?, she says she hasn't hit anything so really not sure !, i am guessing VW wont want to know LOL, never had anything like this even with my 35 profile tyres, just seem a bit odd really !

Looks like someone has gone at it with a samurai sword.

The damage on the rim came from when she carried on driving !, where the tyre was on the wheel in its original position there are no marks (i know this as the white dot on the tyre originally lined up on the opposite side of the air cap).

That's a significant failure, although I'd raise it with VW suggesting they send it to Continental, I sadly doubt they'll do much.

Can you get an independent opinion to go armed with?

How new!!?  I'd be complaining to the dealers with an otherwise pristine looking alloy.  The split is two fold there.

we have only had the car a few days, its done two small trips !!, i never had an issue with my R with a 235-35-19 , just seems a bit odd !

Looks like its defective to me due to the split on the wheel rim side . I assume this is a brand new car ? I would complain to the garage

Out of interest when was it manufactured? Look at th last four digits of the Tire Identification Number with the 2 digits being used to identify the week immediately preceding the 2 digits used to identify the year.


The above example shows 5107 that means manufactured during the 51st week of the year 2007.

I had a defective tyre replaced on a 2nd hand car bought from Teesside Audi so if you need a precedent for a dealer replacing a defective tyre I'd gladly forward you the emails. The defective tyre was discovered after the car was lowered and didn't track properly and Audi were fully aware and still replaced the tyre at main dealer price no questions asked. This was after 4 months of ownership.

Definitely take it up with them. Nothing ventured nothing gained

normally when tyres get send back themy normally say its been damaged by hazard of the road-worth  a try to get it replaced
