Changing steering wheel spoke cover thingies.....
« on: July 03, 2009, 10:38:22 am »
A friend of mine has the standard steering wheel - not a MFSW.
He wants to change the plastic covers on the two side spokes.
Is this a matter off simply unclipping the old and clipping on the new, or is there a little more detail to follow?

Is it possible to fit the MFSW controls in this manner? I have a DSG steering wheel without MF and would like it but dont want to pay hundreds for another wheel.

If so, anyone got the part numbers and know everything required to do the job?

Edit: Misunderstood the OP. Thought he wanted to fit MFSW controls.

On a non-MFSW the side clips are just plugged into a rubbery compound that fills the spoke. Prise them off carefully and slowly and they will pop out easily enough. If you tug them out too violently the rubber splits a bit.
On a MFSW the side clips housing the buttons are fitted differently and the spokes are hollow so you can't fit the buttons to a non-MFSW.
I've had both types of steering wheel in my time and have photos of them in bits if anybody needs to see the differences (assuming I can find them on my C drive).

How would you spray them? is it just a simple spray can, or do you need to sand it and all that?
Previous owner of my GTI looked to have been a smoker, and there are slight spots where fag ash has caused the plastic to rise, so would love to do something like that to mine, save buying a new pair.

paint is available from vw, £14 gets you a twin pack of vw colour matched paint and a tin of lacquer. plastic primer is available from halfrauds, next to the normal primer

if your doing silver then use a white primer, not grey or black and sand between coats. theyve very small (the trim) so should be hard to get wrong, if you do just sand it down. will take shots when i do mine  :happy2:

Wiggle and pull boy, wiggle and pull!!!! Work 'em out like a concrete turd
They need the very firm but gentle approach. Once you've got 'em out the first time it's much easier the second if that's any help to you
