Stock air intake coming off
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:09:53 pm »
So, the stock air intake. I know it's pretty crap, but I don't want to spend the money on an aftermarket one until I can afford a remap to go with it.

But in the mean time, I'm getting pretty pissed at the fact that the stock air intake keeps separating at the part where the funnel attaches to the engine cover/air filter. Pic below.

Anybody else have this issue and fix it?

PS: Yes, I know the engine bay is filthy  :P

Are you releasing the clip and pushing it on properly?

As above.

That clip is immensely strong and when its in the correct place over the 2 parts is very tight and will never come lose, ever.

The first few time it came off, yes. I held the clip open with a clamp pushed the funnel back over the engine cover and then released the clip. But since it last came off, I can't even get the bloody thing over the hole.

Mine kept seperating at the intake / bumper side... just ended up getting a carbonio.

I know strange, but have you tried it without the clip?

I had the same thing about a year ago..

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,39629.msg468893.html#msg468893

The pipe should be on about another inch further up than shown here..  You can just see the raised lip on the engine cover just above where the pipe is on in this pic.  The pipe and clip need to go beyond this.

The only way I could do it was to squeeze the clip together to open it up as much as possible and move it down onto the bendy part of the pipe.  You then push the pipe on as far as it will go.  Then move the clip back up until it's in the correct place on the pipe and then let it go.  The pipe then won't go anywhere as it will be over the lip on the engine cover.  I'm sure there's a proper tool for this, but I just used a big pair of mole grips as it was all I had to hand.  Hope that helps!

I use a jubilee clip now and its much easier when it comes to taking the cover off to change the filter.
