Springs or Suspension Kit? And which ones?
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:41:50 pm »
Hi

Looking to improve the handling of my ED30 without going too low or having a harsh ride.

From what I can research on this forum you all seem to recommend the H&R or Eibach when it comes to just springs.

I am looking for a 30mm drop max, so both of these seem to do and you all say the ride is pretty good after.
What I am worried about is the shocks going or becoming bouncy due to having to over work with the now shorter springs... Is this something I should be worried about?

So was thinking about going for a new suspension setup and have it done in one go.
I know I can get a better set of springs and shocks for my money than a coil-over set.
But there are a lot of options and I would appreciate some recommendations.

My end aim is to just tighten up the handing a little, I am never going to take it on track but its just a little more wallowy than I would like for spirited driving.
I already have a Superpro ALK to go on and just want to keep to as close as OEM ride quality ( If not improve it ) as possible.

It looks like you've done your research as you've established Eibach & H&R being the springs recommended on here.

I'm guessing you've seen what people say about ride quality on both? Not much that can be added really, they are both a little firmer than stock but still ride really well.

Your best replacing your shocks at the same time as lower springs will put more strain on them, the OEM shocks still work really well with both types of springs  :happy2:

I have a bilsten b12 kit it came with eibach sport line springs and I'm really happy with this setup, it only lowers the Gti around 20mm

You should fit the WALK kit at the same time as the suspension so that you only have to pay for wheel alignment once.

in your shoes I would

H&R springs
H&R ARBs

Register on the group buy today (it ends tomorrow) http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,55953.0.html

then add the Superpro ALK or wishbone upgrade if you have the cash spare.

That will no doubt be less cost than coilovers or a spring/shock combo but id wager its as good if not even better in the handling dept and will retain a better ride quality.  Then at a later date add some B8 dampers in the mix and the car will be perfect.

I have Eibach Springs on ED30 and give a very nice comfortable drive without feeling crashy, and also make the car handle vey well..

Also looks just the right height on springs..

my gti running Eibach springs and 19" wheels, love them, they dont compromise the ride, handling is great and car sits so pretty! and a fraction of the price too

i believe its 30-35mm, the back is probably a fraction (maybe 5mm max) lower than usual as the boot has a sub and a couple of car batteries in it
