Asbestos concrete pipe disposal anyone any experience?

I had thought that my disaster of 2012 (anything that could go wrong has and much much more) had finally finished but maybe not quite yet.

In the corner behind lots of other stuff in my late fathers workshop unit there is a length of new unused pipe maybe two lengths of about 8 foot long and 6" or 8" diameter + about half a dozen right angle bends.

I'm guessing he was keeping it just in case like everything else he kept.
It could have been there since 1979 or just a few years I have no idea.

It looks like concrete pipe but a mate with me said it maybe asbestos concrete pipe

So anyone know how to find out or going about disposal of it?

I'm seeing a builder mate of mine tomorrow night, as we're local to you I'll ask him how he's gone about it before.

 It does look like concrete asbestos  pipe when I googled it. Google says its not high risk or much of a problem as it is a low content but I'm trying to clear the place out anyway.
Not that I'm doing very well at it.

I think the best bet is to call DCC (Waste Aware) about it, but I think you'll either need a permitted carrier to collect it, or take it in sealed bags to an authorised site and probably will have to pay for disposal.

Otherwise, ask if anyone is building decking or laying foundations for a garage build 

Will still ask my mate tomorrow though, he most likely will have names and numbers if you don't get anywhere.

It can sit were it is for now really , its been there since whenever, so nothing will change as long as I don't disturb it.
Leaving it were it is in the far corner is not much of a problem as there is probably at least a few months of weekends worth of sorting all the other junk out first in the rest of the building anyway. (I don't think he ever threw anything out, ever.  I think were ever anything landed it stayed as there is no order to anything either.)
If this is what it is, it would be nice to know what to do when the time comes though.

best thing to do if you require it moving is to spray the thing with water (a lot) might be worth someone spraying the mist water whilst moving it... then place it into bags and seal them... this way you can move it where ever and when ever...  if you need anymore info give me a shout... I deal with this area for work in the aerospace industry...

Hi am an asbestos surveyor my advice is if the surface is undesturbed ie no loose flaking fibres then keep it there, asbestos is only dangerous once its exposed but usually in concrete its pretty safe as the fibres are tied down.

u could call an asbestos removal firm but they will set a tent up and costs are around 600 plus onwards.

if you do decide to move it manually then wet it right down to make sure fibres aernt released and obviously wear a mask.

Call the local council, they should have a list of preferred suppliers who will deal with asbestos removal. They may even collect it from you. To have it removed and desposed may cost a fair bit. Alternatively, call the council and say someones fly-tipped it on/near your property. They'll be round like a shot.

As said, if you are breaking it up wear the appropriate PPE, Some old clothing that can be disposed of straight after moving it and keep it very wet. Then double bag everything and seal it accordingly. I think Local Council waste disposal places have skips that you can dispose of it. It is best to check before hand.

My local council gave me a list of suitable sites, you have to contact each site a book a slot to deposit it. Double bagged and sealeed is there advise.

They are covered in dust and cobwebs but i was not going to dust them for the photos

To confirm it is asbestos you need to take a sample to a recognised lab. To be safe just spray it with a PVA water mix, this will stop any loose fibres from escaping. When I was in the asbestos removal business( about 15 yrs ago) as long as the bits weren't broken or damaged you could take them to any council skip, not sure if its the same now. If you want to move it and "dispose" of it yourself I'd advise using the PVA mix and using an auri nasal fibre mask (nose and mouth). When I was doing it ,an auri nasal mask and a positive pressure full face mask had the same level of protection,according to the HSE.

Look like the same type of concrete pipe that my internal fireplace flue was made from.

That's probably what it was originally bought for.
Sadly the only people who would have known what it was for, when it was bought, were from, and what it is actually made of died this year.
I would not be suprised if it was for that job thinking back and looking at it. It is probably just concrete but I have no experience with concrete pipes or Asbestos or fires so just dont know.

When my fireplace was changed this year the fitter had taken them out and just left them in the loft. I didnt realise until i went into the loft a week later. So i just took them to the tip, but unfortunately i was aaked what i had, they would let me tip them so they are back in the garage until i can get an appointment to safe disposal.
