OIL LEVELS
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:57:04 pm »
Hi folks,

I have a MK5 GTi (duh  :P !!) but only have it about 8 months, and I seem to be drinking oil for fun...there are no leaks anywhere, no oil in the coolant, little in the exhaust and when I floor it no smokes comes out the back...

Any ideas? I carried out a test recently after finding out that not 8 weeks after getting a service and obivoulsy 4.5 Litres of oil. The warning light came on, so I brought it back to the mechanic and we topped it up again...so here's the results:
Oil topped up at 103716km
@104120km oil was just under half way gone after 6 days!
@104800km oil was a small amount lower then the first check 9 days later!
@105353km oil was just above the MIN level that was today!

Any suggestions, I know I'll need to get something fixed I just want to have a good idea of what it is so I don't get shafted!!!

thanks
Shane

1 litre per 1000 km is "normal" according to VW.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

My edition 30 seems to be doing the same - serviced in September then had to have the DV replaced in November and VW put another litre in. Went up to the lakes at new year so thought I best check it before the long journey and it was just above the min mark again so put another litre in! Probably on covered 1500 miles in that whole period. Surely something is a miss?

What kind of journeys are you doing?

The majority are very short journeys to be fair - could this be the issue?

Yes, short journeys will result in higher oil consumption as will booting it everywhere.
