Foreign Trips - Specifically for Driving anybody done one?

Looking at my holiday being a Stelvio Pass trip. Have seen one with a company @ 750. This is starting in Baden Baden (Germany) then 5 nights 4 days around the area and the Stelvio.


Sounds steep to me has anyone organised their own trip like this before?

Obviously outside of peak times July/August. drivingtours.net do a 5 day event with boutique hotels and sat nav sent to you with pre planned routes etc. Just not convinced that -

1. That is the best price
2. I need a Boutique hotel to stay in
3. I want/need 5 days

Its what we will be doing. ~2000 miles.

.....That's all I ever do - Just stay in local Bed & Breakfast places or, if the weather is good, find a camp site with proper facilities.







Eurotunnel is the best way across the Channel and for a little bit more money it's worth getting an open-ended return ticket - It doesn't matter when you return and you'll be given priority onto the next available train. Watch out for the speed cops in Northern France!!

The GTI is the perfect car for travelling through Europe.

Are you/when you have been making it the focal point of the journey or going for other passes.

I'm tempted (being an ice hockey fan) to go UK - Switzerland to Davos to watch a match or 2, then go Davos - Stelvio (considered epic but can't find any firm details) then pick a good route from Stelvio home - Midlands.

Did Stelvio this August, id recommend a few days in the area, Stelvio is full of cyclists and caravans, whereas the general area, has the San Bernadino pass, and lots of others too, and its really easy to find campsites. Trafoi, has a perfect one :)

If you're going to do a Europe road-trip it makes sense to do it to the max you can. Life ain't a rehearsal. And the Golf GTI is perfect for such a trip - Just travel as light as you can manage.

I did a 3300 mile euro trip over 2 and a half weeks a couple of years back :)

Managed to fit in the stelvio pass and the surrounding areas, as has been said the stelvio is full of coaches and cyclists and its a struggle to do any 'real' driving on it imo, I found the surrounding roads in particular the davos to bormio road much better tbh 

Just book your own accommodation and route, adds to the fun and allows greater autonomy over what you do and when imo...

We did home to the nurburgring, couple of days there then down to Baden Baden, then south to lake constance (freidrichshafen), Lindau, then into davos in Switzerland..
Stopped off at mount santis then over towards the stelvio, then back down into Austria via Italy.. Back up into Germany to Ingolstadt and a tour round the Audi factory, then over to Leipzig for the porsche one...
Then over to Wolfsburg for the vw factory and autosdtadt for a few days, then a stop in Munster, over to the Netherlands and the ferry home..

We actually changed our plans re accommodation using an iPhone and booking.com on route as we decided to go a different way a couple of times, added to the sense of adventure greatly
