I've had quite a few cars over 100k now; Rover 200 owned from 70k - 130k (Sold still running), MK1 Focus, 25k to 120k (Sold still running), SAAB 9-5 Aero 47k to 160k (Sold still running), and I've never (touch wood) had any serious engine problems.
The key is most definitely regular oil changes, that was a big thing on the SAAB's, as quite a few T7 engines died due to blocked oil pickups which starved the Turbos... all down to not changing the oil regularly enough. Mine had 160k when I sold it and still pulling hard on the original Turbo.
