As said everyone has their own opinions on low/high milage.

For me a car that has had regular drives and serviced and looked after correctly is more important.... regardless of milage. If it happens to be slightly lower than normal then great. However if the milage is too low then I would tend to stay away.

There are some high mileage bargains to be had out there.... but the gti being more of an enthusiasts car you will know they have been looked after. Doesnt mean there isnt some trash out there though.

The positives with a car that is used everyday is that you know it works everyday  :happy2:

The whole resale value due to mileage thing is a result of salesmen telling Mr & Mrs Average prospective buyer that low mileage is better and persuading them that the car will last longer, which isn't necessarily true. It's rather like the false idea that a house with more bedrooms is worth more, irrespective of the tiny size of those useless bedrooms.

The salesmen are dictating the values  :fighting: Car salesmen and estate agents are very unpopular for good reasons. IMO!

All cars with over 100k miles should be scrapped with immediate effect.

The owners should be given a public caning too.

Thats a crap analogy Robin.  :rolleye:  The price is mainly dictated by demand. A couple of older cars, like yours are going to be great buys, because you keep it in top notch. Most are not i am a afraid. there is a greater chance, statistically of getting a better car, the newer it is.
Think of it like us Humans. You might get a 70 year old Woman, very healthy eats all the correct food walks the dog every day, looks good for her age. compared to a younger lady, still  nice and shapely good to look at but had a rough life. Even if there relative asserts made them both worth checking out, there is still a chance the Old lady could drop dead at any moment.

I agree RR valuations are only given as a guide anyway, they don't mean much, a car, house or anything for that matter is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay.

My dads a mechanic n has always told me that mileage on a car means nothing if its been well looked after. I know lots of high mileage cars that have been looked after because they have had to as part of a contract. I know I wouldn't turn down a car with high mileage on if I was happy with the servicing etc

....You're not wrong, TC. I was just playing Devil's Advocate and having a gentle rant against the bias over mileage.

Cars are at their best at 100k miles. Cars these days are designed to do 250k miles

I've had quite a few cars over 100k now; Rover 200 owned from 70k - 130k (Sold still running), MK1 Focus, 25k to 120k (Sold still running), SAAB 9-5 Aero 47k to 160k (Sold still running), and I've never (touch wood) had any serious engine problems.

The key is most definitely regular oil changes, that was a big thing on the SAAB's, as quite a few T7 engines died due to blocked oil pickups which starved the Turbos... all down to not changing the oil regularly enough.  Mine had 160k when I sold it and still pulling hard on the original Turbo.

Many people still have a hang up on higher mileage cars and should buy on condition instead.

I once owned a Vectra B with nearly 230k on the clock.

Certainly more how it's been looked after rather than just looking at the clock. I'm coming up on 98500miles on my Gti with regular servicing and oil changes every 3-4k and you'd never know the milage because it's taken care of. I do work on a woman's mk5 Gti I know with half the miles of mine but nowhere near the condition as its purely just not looked after. Have to look at the bigger picture sometimes.

Had a mk2 Gti with 215k miles and just kept going and going. Good old German build quality!!

I imagine it would have been cheaper to hire a veyron to cover those miles  :ashamed:
