Tapping sound
« on: January 06, 2013, 09:56:05 pm »
Hi all

This is my first time posting after just picking up my new 2005 GTI. Great car so far but I've noticed a tapping sound coming from what sounds like just behind the glove box (although I may be wrong).  It taps maybe 12-14 times in a row and then it'll stop and then start again 5 or 10 minutes later.  Went out for a half hour drive today and noticed it a few times.  Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
I'm sorry if it's been covered before, I did have a look on the search function but couldn't find much.

Thanks

It's a flap, something to do with the a/c. Mine does it too; switch off the a/c and it'll stop.

I haven't a clue how to fix it, I've just got used to it.

Oh and welcome - say hello in the new members section.

I can agree with that. Both my R32 and GTI clicks every so often. After an aircon service at VW I've not noticed any since.

Mine also does it. I believe its more obvious on the GTI due to the dual zone Climate control, as there are two sets of motors continuously adjusting flap positions.

Mine's been doing that tapping/clicking noise since new, 2005, seems to be more apparently when you adjust the climate control temperature, i guess i am just used to it now, lol!!

I believe this is due to the motor stopping in the wrong place, its on a butterfly valve which can sometimes not close correctly due to a build up of crap mainly, or it often just shuts down before it has had chance to reposition correctly...

disconecting the battery should reset the motor fully  :happy2:

Thanks for the replies guys. Tried turning the A/C off going back and forth work today and, as you've said, it stopped. Looks like I'll just get used to it

I like to think it's my little friend who lives in my car. He might be a little pixie or possibly a leprechaun. When I turn on the a/c he gets a bit chilly and bangs his little stick to get me to turn it off.

Someday I imagine he'll crawl out of a vent, dust himself down and proclaim "dididididididilieee 'tis meself, the little tinker who lives in your car!". After getting such a shock I'll drive into a tree and kill us both.

Got the same noise which started a week or so ago.....
But does disconnecting the battery cause any other problems? Like losing the radio settings? ECU probs - I don't know. not had my GTI long. On previous cars I had to watch out for these sot of things.. Got round losing power when taking the battery out by conneting a second battery in via an unswitched power outlet,
