I want a SMOOTH look! Front & Rear bumper
« on: January 10, 2013, 02:36:24 pm »
Hi,

Quick question. Hopefully you can help me with my decision:

Rear
Now I was wondering what complications I would face, if I bond/smooth the upper and lower bumpers/valance.

Please note. I will be bonding a ed30 rear bumper and not the standard textured GTI one - pictured above.
But as the fitting is seperate, I'd imagine fitting them both back on as one peice is just going to be a pain... No?

Front

Again for the front I'll be bonding the entire front bumper, ed30 front splitter & mouldings to be completely smooth and one single piece.

I don't have Xenons and I assumed the only reason for the moudlings was for headlight jets? Is that correct?

Also, any recommendations on bonding would be helpful too. (e.g. Plastic welding)

Apologies for my crappy outline images above, I'm at work and should really be doing work :)

Thanks for any feedback.

Plastic welding, flexible filler, plastic primer, paint. Job done?

'Big Al' has his edition/vortex lip smoothed into his front bumper. He didnt do the work himself but you should expect to pay around £150 it to be done.

With the rear bumper. I would expect cracks in the filler so I would almost wait for the filler to completly dry for a few days to allow it to crack if needs be, Then re-fill before paint.
As above use flexible filler and you should be okay.

Mano has done the rear bumper joint on his r32 rear he's selling and top cat had his r32 one done to the upper bumper aswell.

From the pic you've posted te part you wanted to fill under the headlight looks to be 2 pieces, if it is ten I wouldn't fill them as 2 piece ones indicate you have headlight washers

Many thanks Chris for pointing out the possibility of the rear cracking after filling. I'm really keen in getting this done. I just love the subtle & seamless look.

I'll speak to a few body shops and get some ideas on prices for both the front and rear.

Nodz, the car in the picture isn't actually my car. I didn't have time to take a pic. But I wasn't aware of the 2 peice moudlings indicating washers. Luckily, I have 1 peice.

Well I guess thats it then - smooth front & rear it is.

Well I made an enquiry to Nige at BCS about getting the full TBE.
I'll probably get the rear done before the front, as my exhaust at the minute is just really unhealthy looking.

My list of future mods is huge at the minute. But I'm going to take my time on this one and just get everything prepped and ready. Not rushing it!

Any pictures of smoothing the front out would be good to see - I've not seen many that have the lip, mouldings and entire front bumper filled as one peice.
Infact, just let me see any smoothed mk5 golfs - it will just motivate me to get it done.

Here they are in primer off the car.....

Heres one of the front and as you can see ive smoothed one of the wiper/ washer holes and have left the washers working (smaller hole towards outside) and have added a lower valance. All welded together, no filler!

Heres one of the rear

These pics are a few months old now and neither bumper was finished at this point so no picking up on defections please their just too give you the idea
Matt

Bloody Excellent Matt !! That looks great!

You get the bonnet welded aswell. I'm sure it will look stunning once painted.
