Made an interesting discovery, changed my cam follower today...
« on: January 10, 2013, 07:29:22 pm »
Well ill start by saying my car is an 05 GTI with 80k miles on the clock.
Went to change my cam follower today and this is what it looked like, tbh I was crapping myself as I had been having recent fueling issues! This was the result!

I was extremely relieved but changed for a new one anyway as I was there!
Also to my surprise I had the flexible hose on my HPFP and pressure relief valve which I thought only came on newer GTI's? Anyway this made my job much easier to carry out.

Look out of interest at the engine block, says BWA? You can see faintly in this picture, for those who know where it's normally stamped. But to the left on the plastic cover it mentions code AXX

I mean I'm pleased it looks like I have a newer type engine and my cam follower is hardly worn but WTF?

Says AXX on the cambelt cover... maybe the head has been swapped at some point in its life!

'05 car has an AXX. Yours must have had a replacement at some juncture, so that follower isn't 80k old.

Certainly doesnt look like its done 80k! I've had the car a year with 69k on the clock if that's the original follower it's possible it could be a very young engine :/ oh well she runs like a dream anyways and I've looked after her with no expenses spared!

The AXX, BWA engine code is stamped into the head... so it might just have had a new head.

And new HPFP and fuel lines as I have a flexi hose underneath instead of banjo fixing. And the HPFP has the pressure relief valve which I believe the older cars did not have..

its not just the outside of the follower you need to look at, the inside wears too
