Fog lights rant
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:40:15 am »
Is it just me or is there anyone else on here noticed more and more people on the road driving with fog lights on?? I thought fog lights where for driving in foggy conditions, not for normal night time driving!!  :fighting:

Your right there. I'm I correct in saying that it is illegal to drive with fog lights on unless it is "foggy" and if stopped by the Feds you collect 3 points for your driving license and have to pay  a £60 fine?

I must admit the amount of people who do it now is stupid, and gets right on mu nerves. IIRC its if visibility is reduced to less than 100m then your allowed to use them. The only time I've used mine when there wasn't any heavy fog was in stupidly heavy rain/hailstones once when I was on the m20 doing under 20mph as I couldn't see past my bonnet

That's fair enough, but it's people using them in clear conditions at night that are using them illegally.

I agree, it used to be the odd one now a then round my way, now I loose count of how many people I see daily.

The only one time I let it go is if a headlight goes as most vehicle handbooks say to use the fog lights if you have a headlight blow

There also seems to be more people using fog lights in leiu of headlights.
It started off just during the day but now seems to be more and more at night (Side lights + Fog lights).

All it actually does for the driver is give them a really good view about 1-2m in front of the car!

I'll stick to headlights, I can actally see where I am going.

I am of the view that the fog lights do make the car look better when switched on. This is why I have fitted LED's to fogs that come on with the side lights. The light output is a little less than the sidelights so just picks them out as a feature with no meaningful light output.

same down my way, everyone seems to have them on (and those stupid hid's) may have something to do with the cut backs in policing and them having less patrol cars on the road

There's someone round my way with hids in his headlights and his fogs, always on no matter the time if day or weather. Sort it out seriously

It's interesting, I think a lot of people are pretending to have DRL's, or not realising there is a big difference between DRL's and fog lights..

VW designed the car to have the fog lights (dimmed obviously) used as DRL's - the option is there in VCDS  :ashamed:

I ran my GTI with the fogs as DRLS's (appropriately dimmed), they went off with the handbrake activated and when the auto lights activated.

Fogs dimmed as DRL's sure is better than no DRL's as your more visible  :pomppomp:-obviously not as good as the LED DRL's that Robin has.

I too HATE to see drivers with bright fog lights on when there is no fog  :fighting:
