EGR + INLET MANIFOLD

Hi, im not experienced with taking apart engines but this is where i intend to start.

I have a 54 plate 2.0 tdi bkd engine golf, which has done 110,000 miles, now im pretty sure the egr and inlet hasnt been cleaned out in some time. I havnt had the car long and thought it would be a good diy to do  myself.

Before someone says use the search function and google, I have but all i have seem to find was peoples before and after images. Now i appreciate these still but what im really after is images of where to locate the fixings for these parts. i know the cleaning process.

if anyone has any images or has found a guide with a walkthrough id appreciate it.

I wrote this in another reply on how to remove the EGR. I did this when fitted an EGR delete pipe. I didn't go as far as removing the inlet manifold but I would't have thought it would be too difficult. I take it you have the plastic one the bolts to the front of the engine the same as mine. I would say its just a few bolts which hold it on and a gasket.

So for the EGR start be removing the clip that holds the hose in at the bottom of the ASV and pull it out. Then undo the 3 bolts that hold the anti-shudder valve to the EGR, one bolt is longer from memory and holds both the ASV and EGR to the manifold. Disconnect the plug and remove ASV. You should now be left with 2 screws holding the EGR on plus 2 on the connecting metal pipe on the right hand side. Disconnect the plug and there you go.

I just used carb cleaner to clean it. I'd suggest wearing rubber gloves if you do it otherwise your hands will be black for weeks.

Would you recommend replacing the gasket as a rule? I guess it has a part number like other parts.

You'll find a diy if you look elsewhere online. It's a more expensive option, but if your going to the trouble of removing it, get the car remapped and delete the egr all together, double win.

All I can seem to find is before and afters. Think il give the egr a look just to see if its clogged up or not. That is a more expensive option but a much for exciting one ha

I have done mine,the Alan key bolts on the egr housing are okay except one at the rear is a bit difficult,when you come to remove the manifold there is a bolt inside the housing where the egr came of

Did you find much if any improvement from cleaning them out maxitrol? Did you change the gaskets too? If so did you get these from vw?

To be honest I didn't notice any improvement, put a new gasket on but got it from tps
