exhaust decat
« on: January 14, 2013, 02:57:56 pm »
Hi guys was thinking about getting my exhaust decatted, its a stock exhaust on a gti mk5 05 plate. currently running stage 1, also would i need a remap in order to do the decat, i know sounds like a silly question but in fairly new to all this! To conclude where  would be the best place to get this done? a vw specialist?

It would probably work out cheaper and easier to buy one of the cheap decat downpipes off ebay.

IF you want to keep the stock exhaust but free up a few HP, slightly improve MPG, reduce EGT's then try a Pre-Cat delete.  Most modern cars have two cats, a Pre-Cat and the main cat (usually around 800 cell).
The Pre-Cat is there to reduce emissions for cold weather starts in Germany / EU.... but this isn't part of our MOT, so will not be a problem for you. The Pre-Cat sits in the first section of the exhaust and bolts straight up to the Turbo... basically a brick wall for exhaust gases.

You can run a pre-cat delete with a stage 1 no problems.
IF you then go on to remove the main cat, this will flag a warning light on the dash for Stock and Stage 1 cars.... Stage 2 and above remove this cel warning.

A main cat de-cat will more than likely fail MOT on emissions - a sports cat (100/200 cell) may still fail MOT but you have more chance at passing.  (A pre-cat delete  will sail through)

I will definitely consider that as I am going for that raspier sort of sound and with mine being a DSG i hear the DSG Pops are much louder
